Chinook Salmon Fishing in Soldotna

Over recent decades, Soldotna has become synonymous with Salmon fishing. This area hosts some of the top fisheries for Pacific Salmon, Chinook (King) being the most popular. In 1985, Soldotna broke the world record for the biggest King Salmon caught with rod and reel, weighing in at 97 pounds and 4 ounces. Ever since, tourists from all over the country have come here in hopes of catching yet another record-breaking Soldotna King Salmon.

When to Fish for Salmon

You can target Salmon in the Kenai River, Cook Inlet, and surrounding lakes any time between May and September. King Salmon arrive in late May and last throughout the summer. They start to taper off at the beginning of September, so the best time to go fishing for Chinook is either June or July.

Sockeye (Red) make their debut in late June, followed by Pink (Humpback) Salmon. The best time to go fishing for Sockeye is late July through early August, while the Humpback’s peak lasts throughout most of August. It’s also important to note that, historically, years ending in even numbers are excellent for targeting Humpback.

Coho (Silver) is also one of the top dogs when it comes to Salmon fishing in Soldotna. They’re known as the hardest-fighting out of all the Pacific Salmon species and are extremely challenging, even for the most experienced anglers. They make their entrance in late July and stick around until late August.

Top Fishing Spots

Depending on which part of the Kenai River you’re fishing from, you’ll be using different types of boats and techniques. The lower portion of the river is deeper, so you’ll most likely be fishing with a powerboat. Here, fishermen target Kings by drifting and back trolling while using spinning or conventional tackle. In the upper Kenai, you’ll be fishing in shallower water, so your best bet is a drift boat or inflatable raft. This portion of the Kenai produces lots of Sockeye and Coho and is an excellent option if you plan to fly fish or use light tackle.

If you’re fishing Cook Inlet, you’ll want to use downriggers with cut plug Herring or lures behind flashers. The best spots are along the south shore of Kachemak Bay, as well as the shores of Homer and Anchor Point.

Need to Know

All residents above the age of 18 and non-residents above 16 are required to purchase a fishing license. Please note you’ll also need an additional stamp to harvest King Salmon. Fishing guides usually provide bait and tackle, so just be sure to pack your own snacks and drinks and bring extra layers of clothing in case it gets windy. Start looking for a charter that will take you fishing for King Salmon in Soldotna. Pick your guide and get ready to explore America’s Last Frontier!
