What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Pulaski, New York for the first time?

After the salmon run at these water levels & with steelhead not in great numbers yet, be prepared to work at it and be patient. Temper your expectations and if you get skunked - just keep practicing what you were taught more.

Do your research, there are a lot of people on the river. Also note that you cannot fish until 30 min before sunrise, which means you are just sitting in a boat for hours without fishing just to get a good spot.

Dress warm, bring extra layers. You won't be walking far so having the extra layers to keep warm will only make your day more enjoyable. Waders with felt bottom or spikes to hold yourself in place on the rocks.

Do more research on reality, not the advertising. Understand that it's all with lures and the captain/mate does everything. Mostly, you sit around useless.

Be prepared for varying water levels especially during low water periods. It can be difficult to navigate the river with a boat during those periods.

Get a guide! It helped us tremendously he thought us how to fine tune our technique and presentation to be way more affective and land way more fish!

We went at the beginning of October and there were not a lot of fish yet. Definitely coming a couple weeks later next year.

Don't be frugal when it comes to your equipment. Buy high quality waders and boots. Talk to your guide prior to the trip and take any and all advice he offers on preparing for your trip.

Be very excited about catching your first Salmon. What an experience on Lake Ontario. The King Salmon taste amazing when caught in the deep, cold waters of Lake Ontario. Bring a big cooler too.

If you don't wanna be disappointed go with a guide and you'll have a better experience and learn a few things.
