What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Cozumel, Quintana Roo for the first time?

The island sits right along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and the dramatic drop-offs just minutes from shore mean you don't have to waste hours traveling to get to deep, productive waters. To ensure you have a flawless day out on the water, keep these essential recommendations in mind: 1. Timing is Everything (Match Your Target Fish)While Cozumel offers great fishing year-round, what you catch depends entirely on the season. Spring/Summer (March – August): This is the peak "high season" for big-game sport fishing. If you want a shot at Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, Blue Marlin, or White Marlin, book during these months. Fall/Winter (September – February): The focus shifts slightly to hard-fighting Wahoo, Tuna, Kingfish, Barracuda, and Snapper. 2. Lock in an "All-Inclusive" Charter For your first time, do not try to piecemeal a trip. Look for reputable charters that explicitly state they provide everything—the boat, captain, crew, high-quality rods and reels, bait, and crucially, your Mexican fishing licenses (which are legally required for anyone on a boat where fishing gear is present). The Sun is Intense: Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a polarized pair of sunglasses (essential for seeing the fish in the clear blue water), and a light long-sleeve sun shirt. Book an Early Start: Plan for a 7:00 AM departure. The waters are usually calmer, the morning bite is strongest, and you will beat the heat of the midday sun.

Take plenty of sun screen and long sleeve fishing gear cause the sun bits harder out on the water. Make sure you have motion sickeness patches on if you have a weak stomack like I do. If your on a cruise and want to have it cooked youll have to give yourself about 2 hrs before you need to be back on the boat to enjoy that experimce. Taxis were easy to find but pricey. It cost us $90 to get to and from the port.

There is lots of water out there and having a captain that has been fishing the area is really helpful. You may also want to check on language(s) spoken ( my trip was quiet because of a language barrier), electonics that are used, boat seating (comfort) and species you want to catch. Getting to the fishing boats from a cruise ship or hotel doesn’t seem to be a problem with cabs. Coming back I was dropped off at a dock next to the cruise dock which was convenient. An air conditioned area and a bathroom should also be inquired about , have some fun.

The trip is awesome. The captain and mate are so helpful. Yes I would recommend this charter for a child or a senior citizen. Captain an Lalo make your day. They try to find fish. They never stop. Very impressive. We were so happy with our trip. Can’t wait to visit Cozumel. Again and get to go on another fishing trip.

March is not good for Marlin and Sailfish but we caught Snapper, Yellowfin and Barracuda. The crew filleted a Snapper for us which we took back to the hotel. The local chef cooked it for us and it was unbelievable. Cooked perfect… Westin Cozumel rocks!!!

There were so many bonefish in the flats, I am not sure how it could be better. I had more than a dozen shots to cast to bonefish, maybe closer to twenty. But I am still a novice, so the fact that I didn't catch that many i place on me.

I would definitely book Aquadventures anytime you go to Cozumel Although we were told the better fishing is March, April, May. We may actually take a trip there again just to go fishing in the future. This past January trip was an excursion through a Caribbean cruise we took last month.

The night before our trip (too late to try to re-book), we were told the propeller was broken on our booked boat. The new boat was too small for the 5 people we had booked, so one of our party didn't get to go. I asked the new captain what happened to the old boat. He had no idea what I was talking about. I then found out, this was not the captain we had originally booked. Clearly, we got "sold" to another group. The first mate had NEVER BEEN ON A BOAT BEFORE. No idea how to bait a hook. He had to be told every move to make by the captain and he usually did it wrong. Needless to say, we caught zero fish. Everyone else we talked to who went out that day had an amazing day... so the fish were biting. DO NOT book with Albatros Charters!

Marlin and Sailfish seem to be a real highlight here. I believe thats in May. We came on a Carnival cruise and it was a 12-15 minute ride from the port. Maybe try to snorkel for 30-45 minutes or longer on the same trip.

I took a cruise in the slow months I knew the fishing offshore was going to be slow for September it's late in the season for them to fish have already migrated out . I would recommend going earlier May June July

If you plan to go reef fishing it is for beginners and you will have a lot of action. If you are not getting bites you may need to check your line or bait. Try to keep the bait as close to the bottom as possible as you can while you "drift" fish. That is how I would explain reef fishing. If you go deep sea fishing most of the fishing is done at the surface and trolling so the equipment does most of the work.

From my very limited experience fishing in Cozumel (three times), April is when things are really just starting to "pop". I haven't specifically targeted sailfish or marlin but know the closer to the start of summer you get the better the fishing gets for those species. Younger Mahi Mahi are typically schooled up thick and some lone bull mahi can be caught too. The best part of fishing down there is that no matter the time of year there is always something to target in good numbers and often it's something that is delicious to eat!

Taxi’s to the marina will try to charge high fees for transportation. Make sure to set a price before departure or arrange with charter. Also, make sure to communicate your expectations to the captain before the trip. Make sure there are no hidden fees. You can keep your catch and ask resort chef to prepare a meal for you. Bring sunscreen and take some Dramamine 1hrs before your trip to avoid sea sickness.

These guys took care of everything! You just show up ready to fish! Easiest of all fishing trips I’ve ever taken, and they work their butts off to try and get you on fish! Highly recommend the deep sea fishing!

For deep sea fishing, be prepared that it may take a couple of hours to find the fish, so enjoy the views and the refreshments. We had some scattered rain, but it didn’t slow us down. Take Dramamine BEFORE the trip so sickness doesn’t impact you half way through.

Sun protection and hydration are a must. Other than that trust your captain to put you on some fish and enjoy. I always look for crews that are local and are on the water almost every day.....these guys know where the fish are and how to get them in the boat

We didn't catch any sought after species like Bill fish or anything but just catching some big barracudas is enough for me to be satisfied. Depending on what your expectations are you should have a great time!

We only caught Mahi Mahi, and this was one that I did list that I wanted to fish for. It would have been neat to also see some other fish, but in retrospect we should’ve booked a longer trip so we had more time to try for other fish.

Research , speak with Captain often before trip on conditions and where you will be going let him know your target fish to catch and alternatives. Do not go expecting to catch a prize winning fish. Go to have fun.

Do it! A beautiful time on the water, fish are a bonus. We had strikes on baitfish so fish were there although we didn't catch any. Check different times of the year for other fishing opportunities, we were on a cruise so locked into February. We always book excursions outside the cruise line to save money and have many more options

Best fishing season seems to be in spring/summer, but you can catch other species in fall / winter with a good Captain. Definitely recommend Abrimar / Captain Mario to take you on a very private trip. He grew up on the island- his dad was a fisherman who taught him where the fish are!!

Mahi-Mahi were plentiful in July, but if you want a billfish, (Marlin or Sailfish) Captain Freddie recommended February through March are best for catching these. Migration is in full effect at this time and the likelihood of catching these fish are magnified, though still available in July, but at reduced chances.

If your debating between the 4 hour or 6 hour trip I would fully recommend doing the full 6 hour trip. We caught half of our fish in the last 2 hours of the trip. Gives the crew the best chance to get you on the fish.

Be ready for anything. The trip out was smooth and productive, the trip back in was rough, very rough, and we caught nothing.

Fishing is always hit or miss. It has always been a good time but i seem to miss more times than not.

Give Cozumel Fishing a try, they will work hard to put you on the fish and they are very friendly.

we had a couple shots at fish but no luck. lots of sea grass. Captain tried hard all day. Super nice mate and great lunch.

Tough time on the water but the crew and captain worked harder than I have ever seen a boat work for fish!
