What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Playa Del Carmen, Quintana Roo for the first time?

From what we heard, mahi season is almost over. We were lucky enough to have an amazing captain and get on more mahi than we could handle. For what could have been a bust on mahi, our captain and mate killed it!!! So my opinion is skewed, but I'd rate it a five if they told me our trip was daily.

Maybe a bigger boat if it’s first time fishing and ask if you will be managing your own Rod. . That’s the only think lacking for me- I wanted a fishing rod of my own. The Captain was responsible for all of them. We just waited for a bite.

Capt Alfonso and his crew were excellent, but we ended up trolling back and forth a half mile offshore, caught nothing and had no options. They did not provide any bottom fishing tackle or lighter rods to allow us to fish the bottom after the trolling didn’t work. Needless to say we were disappointed, and will move sure to request a bottom fishing trip next time.

Go out early in the morning, when the water is calm and still. We didn't--our trip was after lunch, and the wind was up and the seas were rough. We had to troll, and did not get one bit or fish on the line, which is very disappointing. Our trip probably should have been cancelled by the captain, but so it goes. If you are a party of more than three people, make sure you opt for a larger boat, or you will feel cramped. Make sure you rent a boat with some shade/a cover, and wear your sunshirt. Also, please make sure your captain has a credit card reader, or you may be expected to pay in all cash--which could be US Dollars, instead of MEX pesos.

I would definanlty tru out the gardi crew, do not go through the resorts. Book your own trip on fishing Booker. Weve done the resort booking in the past and never even got a bite and it seemed like the crews never tried.

Find a charter with a large enough boat to deal with rough seas. Do not go on a small vessel. The water can be rough and it makes for a bad experience if you don't have a vessel that can handle the waves.

I would suggest waiting til May or early June when the fishing is a little better. It was tough fishing but the crew will take care of you and try to give you the best experience. I wouldn't take real young kinds as even on the calmest days you are going out on the ocean it gets rocking out there. If you are a fisherman who loves being on the water you are going to love it no matter when you go.

follow the captains instructions. get him on a good mood talk to him and his crewmates. they will reward you with more information on fishing and you can learn alot from them.

For us it was good, however the captain told us that April - July is the best time for fishing in Playa del Carmen.

August is hot, the big fish are far out, but there are plenty of smaller fish that are fun to catch near the shelf and in the shallower waters. Bring a hat!

Definitely go in the morning so there is a better chance to catch fish along with power temps

Be flexible. It's fishing and not catching. If you are flexible and give a try for different species, you should eventually hook into something. Be patient. It's nature.

Let captian know which fish you want to target so they can have the correct bait and poles rigged the right way.

The trip to deep water was short hooked up on Mahi quickly and caught a big Barracuda trolling back to the beach.

Be prepared to have to be patient to hook into fish. Definitely bring anti seasickness medicine if you feel you need it.

Have patience, and with a little luck you can catch some nice fish. You won't catch them all but enough to get the blood pumping and have a nice memory.

Hit or miss on trolling, but very short trip to be fishing in deep water for big fish so well worth the attempt. Beatitiful water and a pleasant day whether lots of fish are caught or not.

The seas were calm and beautiful but we did not Fairchild any bigger fish like Mahi mahi. The kids has a great time and caught 9 trigger fish!

Great weather for fishing. But not high season. With the right crew you can still get a good catch!

We were told that if you're looking to catch the bigger fish, May through August is the ideal time to go.

I am not sure if all of the trips are the same, but we wanted to fish, not just be along for the ride and to reel. I would recommend a shorter vs. longer trip.

you will get wet boarding the boat as boats are not on docks. bring snacks and drinks of your choice and enjoy the experience. I

The waters may be tougher than you’re used to so come prepared with anti-nausea if you think you may be sea sick

I would recommend fishing here in the summer if possible, but we were still able to catch fish with our great guides in March.

The earlier in the day the better. Fishing is better and you miss the mid day heat. The sun off the water is very hot!!

Hard for me to say. Fishing was slow when went but crewed working the whole time trying to get fish.

Our crew said that May is the ideal month to fish although you can catch interesting fish year round. We were on the tail end of the best fishing season when we went in late June.

Book an early trip, it is fishing, so enjoy your day, and resoect your crew, doing all the can to put you on fish and deliver a great day.

Be patient…fishing isn’t best in the fall, but still plenty of fish to be caught if you’re patient.
