Hire a guide: Especially for beginners, hiring a local fishing guide can be a great way to learn the ropes, discover good fishing spots, and ensure a successful trip. Research what fish are in season during your visit.
Spring: Redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel
Summer: Flounder, sharks, king mackerel, mahi-mahi
Fall: Cobia, redfish, speckled trout, bluefish
Winter: Sheepshead, pompano, black drum

Captain Wayne was terrific! He was very accommodating, contacting us well in advance of the trip to pick the best day for fishing to avoid bad weather. He kept our rods baited and found the best fishing spots. We caught 30-40 fish including a few huge ones (mangrove snapper and Gag grouper that we released). He was able to recommend a great restaurant to cook our catch. Would highly recommend. We have done other fishing trips and this experience stood out well above others for the level of communication and attention to safety.

I would recommend you go offshore fishing and do a catch and cook if you can. There are many restaurants around that will cook the fish that you catch once they're cleaned. Call around and check out which ones work.

Make sure you have your directions down, not hard at all to find but dont want to be trying to find it the morning of the trip. After trip you can go to LG Schooners restaurant there at the docks where they will cook your fresh catch right there...it was excellent!

March can be cool especially once the sun starts to go down. Captain Jake suggested we bring warm clothes, which we did and were thankful. Overall, our fishing experience was great!

The fish are there and hungry, the issue with later in the year is the wind and storms. Have some flexibility if you need to move trip up a day or back a day for weather.

Expect the unexpected and remember, nothing is guaranteed. Broken Tip’s slip is in a small, quiet marina, but they get you out there quickly.

Before entering the Gulf, prepare for seasickness, i.e. don't eat or drink anything but water, and use Dramamine an hour before. Don't expect to catch much in the Gulf, as it can be unpredictable.

Definitely check the weather and swell conditions, also go for an afternoon trip rather than a morning trip.

It’s just a short drive from Destin. It takes about 30 minutes from the Destin beaches but is worth the drive.

Ensure calm seas to avoid sea sickness as the waters got rough very quickly once we entered the Gulf from the bay!

Try the bay and inlets. Around docks and the mid bay bridge. Then out to the gulf if the action is slow.
