Fresh South Florida Fishing Reports

The past week has been relatively slow inshore. But today it picked up with a mixed bag of Black Drum, Spanish Mackerel, Mangrove and Mutton Snapper, Jacks, and more. When it’s calm enough, we might even sneek outside the jetties to pursue spanish mackerel. Inshore fishing in this area isnt known for filling the cooler with edible fish, and many inshore captains wont even entertain the idea. But here at 1 Fathom Sportfishing, I am always up to the challenge of sending people home with bags of meat. Today we did so successfully.

Beautiful flat calm conditions made for a great day on the water. The action started quickly with a sailfish hooked within the first 10 minutes of trolling — always exciting to land a trophy fish before even getting fully offshore! Once the trolling bite slowed, we switched to bottom fishing and managed to put a few tasty snapper in the box despite a strong current. The inshore fishing around Boca Grande, Florida continues to produce quality redfish. This trip resulted in a beautiful overslot redfish caught fishing shallow mangrove shorelines on a moving tide. Water clarity has been solid, and the redfish are staging along structure in 2–4 feet of water. We’ve been finding success targeting oyster bars, points, and current edges. Live bait has been productive, but artificials are also getting solid eats when presented naturally with the tide. Cooler water temps have these fish feeding consistently throughout the day, especially when the sun gets up and warms the flats. It’s a great time of year for anglers looking to hook into bigger class redfish without heavy boat traffic.
