Deep Sea Fishing in Panamá

If you’re a big game angling enthusiast, deep sea fishing in Panama is an absolute must – it’s a popular local legend that this country’s name translates to “an abundance of fish,” after all. Panama’s offshore fishing opportunities are some of the best not just in Central America, but the world. Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and Sailfish all lurk in the deep waters of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. An angling adventure here will see you battling these world-famous big game beasts aboard one of the many friendly, local charters on offer. Get ready for the fight of your life!

Deep Sea Fishing Spots

The best place to deep sea fish in Panama all depends on what you want to catch, your previous angling experience, and how far offshore you’re willing to travel. There are charters dotted throughout the country, and trip lengths vary from half day options to extended full day trips. Thanks to Panama’s tourist-friendly vibes, you’ll find trips suited for anyone from hardened fishermen to newbies just discovering their love for angling.

Panama City

Visiting the capital, Panama City? You’ll be pleased to know that it’s packed with plenty of deep sea fishing opportunities, as well as beautiful cobbled streets and historical landmarks. Most charters here depart from Diablo Marina, and charter captains recommend opting for at least a full day trip, as you’ll need to travel around 60 miles out to hit productive waters. But when you do, you’re in for a treat – you’ll find Blue and Black Marlin, Sailfish, and plenty more lurking in these Pacific waters. Even better? When you’ve hooked your catch, you can relax in one of the many bustling cafes for a slice of local Panamanian life.

Pinas Bay

If you want to battle big game but spend less time traveling, then Pinas Bay is calling your name. Located along Panama’s Southern Pacific coast, this area may be somewhat remote, but it’s considered one of the region’s most prolific deep sea fishing locations – and for good reason. Just 13 miles from shore, the waters drop to incredible depths. We’re talking thousands of miles! Here, you’ll find feisty Striped Marlin, huge Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, and more.

Isla de Coiba

Isla de Coiba, a Panamanian island located southwest of the mainland, deserves a shout-out too. Around 20 miles from its shore is Hannibal Banks, best described as an underwater mountain. This natural feature is surrounded by waters that plunge thousands of feet, and you’ll find huge Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and rare, local species here. It won’t take long to reach the hotspots, but local captains recommend a full day trip so you can really go deep!

How to Prepare

You don’t need a fishing license to explore Panama’s hottest fishing grounds, and you’ll be provided with all the rods, reels, bait, and tackle needed for an exciting day aboard your charter boat. Make sure you check local catch and release regulations with your captain, as these are subject to change – but generally, all Billfish should be released. Get ready to discover Panama’s incredible deep sea fishing opportunities!

Recommend round-trip transportation arrangements prior to arrival in Gamboa. Contacting an Uber in Gamboa is difficult. Miguel can also assist with an independent transportation.

These 2 captains had good boats with shallow draft and enough horsepower to get you where you need to go. Fishing equipment was functional but if you desire top equipment you might want to bring your own. Fishing was phenomenal. They communicated with us, English was good, and the 2 of them worked together so the whole family was able to fish. Book them.

Be prepared to go way offshore to get to deep water (300’). It took almost 2 hours to get back to the dock. The seas can be rough so prepare for the motion if you are prone. The variety of fish is amazing!
