Block Island is the Striped Bass Capital of the World. Not to mention giant Bluefish as the best fighting fish. You never know what you'll see there – sharks, whales, seals, sea turtles, or dolphins. It's about a 2-hour ride each way depending on the weather, but it's so worth the ride! The trip usually lasts for 10 hours, maybe longer if all are ok with it. This is usually your fishing trip of a lifetime!

Deep Sea Fishing in Rhode Island

It’s no surprise that “The Ocean State” is one of the top hotspots for deep sea fishing in the US. What Rhode Island lacks in landmass, it more than makes up for in fishing opportunities. With access to the Atlantic across the sounds, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to go deep sea fishing in Rhode Island.

What to Expect

Deep sea fishing is the holy grail for sportfishing enthusiasts around the world, and it really is best left to the pros. While you’ll enjoy the comforts of a large offshore sportfishing vessel, you’d better be comfortable with a rod and reel before coming aboard.

Fishing these waters is serious business. Tuna grow up to over 1,000 pounds, with regular catches of around 700 pounds. Along with incredible-sized Marlin, Swordfish, and even Mako Sharks, they’re ready to make you work hard for your catch, with plenty of heavy lifting to hook ‘em aboard.

Not only that, but you’ll need at least a full day on the water. The productive underwater canyons and even the continental shelf lie around 100 miles offshore, so you’ll need to make up for lost time driving out. Trips tend to start from 10 hours and go up to a few days on the water, giving you the chance to maximize your fishing.

Where and When to Go

Rhode Island’s coastline is littered with excellent fishing ports to take you on an offshore excursion. Even bay towns like North and South Kingstown are stocked with charters ready to take you to the deep waters.

While Rhode Island isn’t actually an island, Block Island is. A marker for many captains, you can enjoy deep sea fishing just beyond, at much closer distances than you’d expect on the east coast. Just 30 miles from shore, monster Sharks and Bluefin Tuna make their way past from July through September, giving you the best chance for a fierce battle against the ocean’s predators.

In fact, summer is the only real time to get offshore in the Ocean State. Not only can the choppy waters get dangerous in winter, but the fish also don’t like it when the temperature drops. Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Bonito, and all the other pelagics will migrate away from Rhode Island from fall through spring.

Towns like Narragansett double in size during the season, as anglers and regular tourists alike flock to the beaches and productive waters. Come outside of the school holidays in early June or September, and take advantage when it’s a little quieter.

How to Prepare

Your captain will have everything ready aboard your deep sea fishing charter in Rhode Island, with all fishing gear, lures, and bait provided. Even your fishing license is covered, so all you need to do is bring some drinks and snacks aboard. Make yourself at home and settle in for a thrilling day of fishing.

If you’re thinking about an East Coast deep sea fishing trip, then why not make Rhode Island your next port of call? Come and enjoy some incredible fishing grounds out of the smallest state!
