Spearfishing in Costa Rica

Like no other sport, spearfishing combines the thrill of diving with the chance to catch some delicious fish. Come spearfishing in Costa Rica, and you’ll discover some of the ocean’s best-hidden gems. From the productive reefs to the vast open waters, there’s a whole world waiting to be discovered.

What to Expect

Most spearfishing charters in Costa Rica offer conventional fishing alongside spearfishing. Combine the two for a fun-filled day out with sure-fire rewards! If you’re a spearfishing enthusiast, you can always ask your captain to spend the whole day in the water. Hunt a range of different fishing grounds and get your fix.

Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there’s something for you in Costa Rica. Everyone can discover the range of fish in the nearshore reefs. From Snappers and Groupers to Trevallies, Roosterfish, and Jacks – you’ll have plenty to target during your productive day out.

Novices will be guided through the spearfishing process by a competent guide, so there’s no need to worry. If you’ve done it all before, though, you’re welcome to go free diving, and you can even hit the deep waters offshore to battle it out with monster Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and more!

Where to Go

Since the turn of the century, Costa Rica has witnessed a tourism boom and it’s easy to see why. The luscious countryside dotted with volcanoes is an epic backdrop to the crystal clear waters. Take a spearfishing charter out of any resort on the Pacific coast and you’re in for a treat.

In the north, just out of Playa Hermosa or Playa Flamingo, the waters are surprisingly warm despite being so close to the open oceans. Plenty of exciting and delicious fish make the reefs their home and you won’t know where to look! Keep your eye on your target and experience the rush of landing that prized fish.

Around the center of the coast, the bustling city of Jaco and delightful resort of Playa Herradura are the places to go for spearfishing. The area is known as Los Sueños, or “The Dreams,” and you’re sure to be in dreamland here. Escape the winter blues and take a trip between December and March for the best conditions in the bay, and get your fill of Cubera, Mullet, and Spotted Rose Snappers, among many more.

Further south towards the border with Panama, the Osa Peninsula creates a peaceful, protected bay for some great shallow-water diving. Head out of Puerto Jimenez and Cubera Snapper will be the order of the day. With the deep waters just a stone’s throw away, this is also the best spot in the country for offshore spear action.

How to Prepare

Spearfishing trips in Costa Rica can last anywhere from half a day to a full day or more on the water. On full day trips, you’ll usually get a complimentary lunch, while there will be plenty of drinks to keep you refreshed on a half day trip.

Some charters may not have all the necessary equipment for spearfishing on board. Check with your captain if it’s provided and make sure to bring your own if needed. The last thing you want is to get on board and find out there’s no gear!

Other than that, everything else you need for a productive day is out on the water. Come spearfishing in Costa Rica and discover a different, magical side to the ocean!

What anglers said about Spearfishing in Costa Rica

It was a little choppy for us, weather was a bit overcast. Show up early, bring your seasickness medicine of choice (we used peppermint oil which was great), sit back and relax and enjoy your time!

Be prepared for plenty of sun and a good fight when you get a fish on. The fish are beautiful and have some amazing colors to them.

Sun screen. Hydrate. Patience. Enjoy every second being on the ocean. Watch for leatherback turtles. We saw two giant ones mating! You might get a pelican to join you. If you are at risk of motion sickness, get the patch or whatever you need to stay healthy on the water.

Most boats are not at docks. You will take a water taxi so your feet will get wet. Make sure you have water shoes or are willing to go barefoot on a rocky beach.

Be ready for a great experience! Just being out on the ocean was a great experience and the fishing is very enjoyable. Recognize there may be significant periods of waiting for the fish to bite.

Find a local captain. Bring some big poppers and top lures. White feather jigs are also good.

Not the best time of year to catch fish, but the charters out of Quepos give you the best chance of catching them. The port was very well kept, clean, and professional. A great experience.

Use Gitana! Tell them you're a novice and ask to practice proper use of the reel beforehand. It is a bit of an art to keep a large fish in the hook.

Temper your expectations and listen to your crew. We had an idea of what we wanted - we communicated that and were open to being agile on the bite.
