Spearfishing in Puerto Rico

There’s a reason why diving and spearfishing enthusiasts from all over the mainland US flock to Puerto Rico. From the white beaches, across the productive reefs, all the way to the deep blue seas of the Caribbean, there’s a whole world waiting to be discovered. Come spearfishing in Puerto Rico and go up against some monster fish for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

What to Expect

Located at the heart of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is in the perfect location for some of the world’s best fishing. With English-speaking professional guides, you’ll have everything you need for a productive day out. Whether it’s your first time with a pole or gun, or you’re a seasoned pro – there’s something for you here.

Beautiful and exciting fish fill the water, giving you an image to remember for the rest of your life as you swim with them. With so many fish on offer, it’s the perfect place to land your first catch or to fill the boat!

Where and When to Go

Around the size of Connecticut, Puerto Rico punches well above its weight when it comes to fishing opportunities, seeing as it’s surrounded by water. Take a charter from any of the island’s coasts and you’re in for a treat. The tropical climate of the Caribbean means that the waters stay warm, so the fishing is year-round here.

Most charters operate out of the popular tourist resorts, so you’re in luck when on holiday in the “Island of Enchantment.” If you’re in the southwest near Boqueron, then the nearshore reefs will be your hunting grounds. Head to the bottom and capture some delicious Lobster, or test your skills against three kinds of Snappers and even Kingfish.

From the west of Puerto Rico, the smaller island of Vieques offers incredible spearing opportunities. Just a stone’s throw from shore, you’ll battle it out with a range of Snappers, Jacks, Hogfish, and many more. Hop aboard a charter and head offshore and there’s no end to what you can catch.

Out of the capital, San Juan, and the surrounding area, you’ll have your pick of the spearfishing targets in Puerto Rico. Hit the reefs for beauties like Hogfish, Groupers, Snappers, and Jacks. Offshore in the Atlantic, you can battle it out with Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and many more prized species in the deep water and really get the pulses racing.

How to Prepare

Puerto Rico spearfishing guides want to give customers the full experience, so you’ll usually have lunch on board full day trips, with plenty of drinks to stay refreshed on shorter trips. You won’t need to bring anything except for a swimsuit and towel, as you settle in for a thrilling day out.

Not all charters will provide spearfishing equipment, and even those that do may require advance notice. Let them know that you intend to go spearing and they’ll advise what to do next.

Watch the sun go down at the end of the day over your delicious catch. What better feeling could there be? Book a spearfishing trip in Puerto Rico and get the most out of your holiday!

You have to work for these fish and you may only boat a few out of several hookups so tamper your expectations.

Bring sunscreen, fishing/sun shirts, hats and good polarized glasses. If you are not a seasoned or experienced offshore fisher donโ€™t be afraid to take some Dramamine the night before your trip. The seas will get bumpy even on the calmest day. Oh, and be ready to reel hard, fast and often!

It's all about the weather, unfortunately you can't control it but try to go out when it's not so windy. We stayed on the Carribean side and not the Atlantic side to stay in calmer waters.

Listen to your captain and trust their judgement! If the bass arenโ€™t biting, consider Tarpon fishing instead.

Bring a cooler if you want to keep your catch. Leave the little ones at home - these are substantial fish that I would recommend for teenagers and above. Pick a charter like Captain Jose with the larger boat to make the trip smoother than on a smaller boat and invest in the 3/4 or full day trip to insure value and catch potential.

Keep in mind that covid regulations are in affect. So the experience might be a little different than you would normally expect. Bait shops are closed and you have to catch your own bait.

If you are looking for a Captain who's passion is putting his customers on fish than Captain Carlos is your man. My experience with Carlos was the high point of my trip to this beautiful paradise. I look forward to returning next year to put in some more time in fishing these productive waters. Fish on Captain, Fish on. Peace
