Fishing in San Juan

There are few capital cities better located for getting you on the water than San Juan, Puerto Rico. Waves crash into the beaches right in the heart of downtown, while the city’s eponymous bay gives you immediate access to a prized inshore fishery. Whatever you’re looking for, one of the numerous San Juan fishing charters has sure got it!

Just 75 miles out, the Atlantic reaches its deepest, and the Yucatan current means that migratory fish get pulled right up to shore. Take advantage of the chance to go after Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and many more within just five miles of the coast!

However, there’s much more to fishing in San Juan than just pelagic species. The city is a year-round home to one of the most sought-after inshore fish in the world – Tarpon. These acrobatic creatures rub shoulders with Snook, Jack Crevalle, Snappers, and Barracuda, meaning you’re sure to find something biting whenever you come.

With such a rich fishery on the city’s doorstep, San Juan fishing charters can be as long or as short as you want. Families and beginners should try half day trips in the calmer waters inshore. And, while that’s enough to land at least one bite offshore, more experienced anglers will want to spend a full day fishing.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing aboard a charter boat will mean that you won’t need to worry about a license, as your captain will have you covered. Your professional guide will also keep you informed of all rules and regulations, including making sure that you release all Tarpon and Billfish.

San Juan Fishing Seasons

January

January is a popular time for vacationers escaping the cold on the mainland. Enjoy grappling with monster Tarpon in the backwaters and bays and finish your day at the vibrant San Sebastian Street Festival.

February

Peak tourist season continues in February, San Juan's dryest month. The great Tarpon bite continues, while you'll find plenty of Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna, amnong many more offshore.

March

Temperatures rise slightly, averaging from 72 to 82 degrees. Offshore, Tuna and Mahi Mahi are biting well around the FADs, while King Mackerel starts to invade the bay. Meanwhile, the Silver King is still on top form.

April

The peak tourist season starts to come to an end, although the weather is still very dry and pleasant. Temperatures remain about the same as they were in March, and the White Marlin bite picks up.

May

The slower tourist season means that smart anglers can find some good deals in local hotels. The Marlin bite is getting better and better, while King Mackerel, Tarpon, and Snook are all biting in the bay.

June

June in San Juan is hot, but there's plenty going on in town and on the seas to make it worth it. Marlin numbers are picking up: this is the best time to target White Marlin, while Blues are getting increasingly good.

July

In a fortuitous time for blue water anglers, as peak Marlin fishing season coincides with the low tourist season in San Juan. Focus on catching a Billfish slam without having to spend more than the odds on a hotel.

August

August is the hottest month of the year in San Juan. The weather is humid, but sea breezes can make you forget about that – especially if you have a Blue Marlin on the end of your line. Multiple hookups are the norm!

September

September in San Juan means one thing – the International Billfish Tournament of Club Nautico de San Juan. One of the top Billfish tournaments in the world, it really is not something you want to miss.

October

As the waters cool, the fishing scene changes up. Blue Marlin bites become less frequent, while Sailfish and Wahoo start to become the main focus. Smaller Tarpon are schooling in and around the bay.

November

November is San Juan's rainiest month, but don't let that put you off. This city is famous for its year-round fishery, after all. With Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo on the cards – it's certainly worth a visit.

December

As rainy November moves into December, the days become sunnier and slightly cooler (we're talking average highs of 'only' 82ºF). Check out the FADs for Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna.
