Fishing in Apalachicola Bay

This stunning estuary on the Florida Gulf Coast is one of the richest, fish-filled bodies of water in the area. An Apalachicola Bay fishing trip will have you basking in the sun, sharing your day with its numerous inhabitants. Plants, birds, mammals, reptiles – the wildlife that inhabits these waters is astonishing! If you decide to visit, you’ll get to enjoy natural views rarely seen anywhere else.

Thanks to its convenient location, Apalachicola Bay can offer some of the best inshore angling in Florida, with a wide variety of fish species making it their permanent home. Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder are the most sought after, while you’ll also come face-to-gills with the likes of Sheepshead, Black Drum, and Jack Crevalle.

The trip you decide to go on will depend mostly on your wishes and ambitions. A half day trip is one of the best ways to introduce yourself to the fishing on offer here, as well as spend some family time relaxing on the water. If your goal is to fill the bags, consider booking a full day trip to cover more ground and maximize your chances of reeling in some big specimens.

The eponymous city of Apalachicola is where you’ll find the largest selection of fishing charters on the bay. However, St George Island, Eastpoint, and Indian Peninsula are also great places to visit for a charter fishing adventure.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re heading out on a fishing charter, you’ll be happy to know you won’t need to get your own fishing license, as it will be covered by the captain. Some of the fish species here have specific regulations, so the best way to ensure you’re fishing within the law is to head out with a reputable captain.

Apalachicola Bay Fishing Seasons

January

At the beginning of the year, you should visit the backwaters where Redfish and Speckled Trout go to hide from the cold waters. Take your family out and show your kids how fun fishing can be!

February

As the temperatures are still fairly low, the best way to explore these waters in February is to look for big Sheepshead, as well as Redfish and Trout.

March

With the beginning of spring, the fish start to wake up and they get a lot more active. This means that the bay will be filled with Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder, so you’ll have your hands full.

April

Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, and Redfish are all in the cards in April. Head out and enjoy a day of fishing in some of the best weather of the year.

August

Fishing for the Silver King isn’t over yet! Head out in search of the mighty Tarpon in August, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the largest specimens.

September

You’ll find that November is very eventful, both on land and on the water! In the fall, you can expect to reel in some prized creatures, like Redfish, Trout, and Flounder.
