What's biting in Connecticut
At the start of the year, you'll find very little action in the Long Island Sound, but many of Connecticut's rivers and streams are bustling with Atlantic Salmon as well as Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout.
Average temperatures are between 20–37°F in February. Those who are willing to brave the cold will be rewarded with some of the excellent Trout fishing that the state is known for.
Spring is on its way, and things are slowly picking up both in the sound and inland. Fluke appear in the Long Island Sound while Bass are starting to bite more in the lakes.
April is an excellent time to cast a line in the Connecticut River. The American Shad run is in full swing, and your chances of catching Trout and Salmon are still strong. There are also quite a few Striped Bass swimming around.
Come May, charter boats all over Long Island Sound are fully up and running. Fluke and Black Seabass are feeding near reefs and rocky shorelines, while Striped Bass are at their peak in the coastal streams.
June is a great time to experience the sheer variety Connecticut has to offer. Wrestle with monster Sharks offshore, make the most of nearshore fishing in the sound, or enjoy local Trout fishing.
Now is the time to head offshore if you're in the market for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Marlin, and other big game beasts. Meanwhile, there's plenty of Porgy, Fluke, and Black Seabass for everyone fishing the sound.
You'll find local Trout and Bass fishing to be slower in the heat of summer, as these fish do their best to stay cool and survive. Meanwhile, the fishing has never been better in the sound.
As fall approaches, Striped Bass and Shad re-appear for a second peak season in the rivers. The offshore action for Tuna can still be good, but you'll need to travel quite a bite before you get to the fishing grounds.
With Tautog at their peak, the Long Island Sound is the place to be! You can catch anything here, from Seabass and Fluke to Bluefish. Try your luck near Block Island or one of the many local reefs.
As average temperatures inevitably plummet toward 30°F, the fishing scene is shifting once again. Many charter boats will soon shut down for the winter, but until then fishing in the sound is excellent.
By December, some of the best fishing in Connecticut is in the streams and rivers. Atlantic Salmon are on the rise, joined by Trout and many other fish. To get to the best bite, you'll need to brave the freezing December mornings, but it will be worth it.

Amazing trip. We went after strippers. We caught many. We learned a lot.
The captain was nice patiente and very efficient.
The equipment was very good. The boat was in excellent conditions.
we caught 15 fish total catched some big ones captain was helpful and a good person to talk book this dude all the time what standed out the most it was my boys sons birthday and he made him have good experience
This was the second trip with Captain Pete and again he did not disappoint! He put us right on the fish , so many i eneded loosing count! His patience with helping my son and I and his personable attitude will keep us coming back for more . Even if we didnt catch anything we would have had a blast! The Captain really makes the boat ! Captain Pete is the best around! See you soon Sir!🫡
This was supposed to be a striped bass charter that I flew in from out of state to do with my family. The Capt said striper fishing was "inconsistent" and pushed for black fishing. We were disappointed but understood this was the nature of fishing and reluctantly agreed. The black fishing turned out to be pretty slow but the Capt and mate put the extra time and effort into catching them, which helped make up for missing out on the striper.
The Capt had said he didn't want anything extra for the charter, he just wanted us to take care of the mate so we added an extra $30 to the high end of the normal and customary tip. We thought we were being good sports about the whole thing so we were taken aback when we were at the dock and the Capt started pushing for more tip money, and then hit us up for an extra $50 for the charter. Not cool Cap!
Long Island Sound Fall Fishing Report – Blackfish, Sea Bass & Porgies | Clinton, CT
Fall fishing is underway on Long Island Sound! A late September nor’easter shifted our usual baitfish patterns, making striped bass fishing less predictable. Low numbers of adult bunker are also beginning to show their potential impact on the fall striper bite. We encourage anglers to support local fisheries advocacy groups and help protect the baitfish populations that sustain our fishery.
The good news? **Black sea bass and porgies continue to deliver consistent action**, keeping rods bending around the productive reefs and bottom structure of Long Island Sound.
Connecticut blackfish (tautog) season opened October 10, and the bite has been consistently productive in the 30–40-foot water column. These hard-fighting fish are a prime fall target around rocky structure and reefs, making this an excellent time to book a **fall blackfish fishing charter in Clinton, CT**.
Persistent winds have made some days too rough to safely fish, so we continue to monitor marine forecasts and adjust our plans when necessary. Safety always comes first.
Ready to fish the fall season? **Book your trip with One More Drift Charters**, departing from Cedar Island Marina in Clinton, Connecticut. Captain Joe targets striped bass, black sea bass, porgies, and tautog throughout Long Island Sound, adapting each trip to current conditions and the best opportunities available.all Into the Bite — Book Your Long Island Sound Fishing Adventure!

I would highly recommend this charter to anyone looking for a fun, memorable fishing adventure. We would absolutely book again!
Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Charters in Connecticut
How much do fishing charters in Connecticut cost?
Private half-day (around 4 hours) fishing trips in Connecticut typically cost $600–$800, while private full-day (around 8 hours) trips run $800–$1150.
Prices vary based on factors such as the length of the trip, the type of fishing experience offered, the equipment and services included, and the overall scope of the trip. Longer trips, more specialized fishing styles, and packages that include additional services or amenities generally cost more than shorter, more straightforward outings. Multi-day trips are typically priced higher than standard day trips.
Connecticut charters often focus on nearshore action for Striped Bass and Black Seabass, with days also turning into fast Bluefish (Tailor) fishing when conditions line up. Local captains get people on the right spots for the tide and water drift, and crews stay hands-on with bait, gear, and guidance so beginners and kids can fish confidently. If you want a productive trip, look for a boat that’s clean and well-maintained and a team that actively adjusts during the day to keep the bite going.

Great captain who knew where the fish were at! Brought my little brother, who's decent at casting, on a charter. The conditions were pretty gnarly, but Wes put us on top of bonitos early and made sure we didn't go home empty handed.
The great thing about Wes is that he's patient and, of course, knows where to look for the bite. The worst thing is getting a captain who gets angry when you don't cast in the right spot, constantly tells you what you're doing wrong, or, in some cases, grabs a rod right out of your hand. Wes is not that guy.
Will definitely book with him again the next time I go on a charter!
Everything from start to finish was incredible . Planning on doing this again really soon . Captain was amazing and made the eperience worth it . Not only was the experience fun and exciting but we cought plenty of fish to bank in our fun memories . The day was fo perfect for fiahing with weather on our side and a good captain. Boat was super clean and verry accomidating for a party of four .
Striped Bass is what anglers come for in Connecticut, with action peaking in June and July. Bluefish (Tailor), Black Seabass, and Scup (Porgy) are also common catches, and they’re strongest in August and July. If you’re planning around the cooler months, Tautog bite best in October and November, while Flounder fishing heats up in June and July.

Caught Moby Dick & Giuseppe!
We had an amazing fishing trip with Captain Mike and took lots of pictures to remember this adventure! My grandson requested to catch striped bass and Captain Mike didnt disappoint him. Communication was top notch and we had all the information we needed leading up to the day of the trip including parking, boat slip and contact number. As we write this review, we are dining on the yummy striped bass we got to take home. We would highly recommend taking this 3 hr. tour with Captain Mike!
We went out today with Captain Mike and his first mate John to celebrate my dad’s 70th birthday, and we had an absolutely fantastic time. There were six of us on board, and everything about the trip exceeded our expectations. We caught seven striped bass which was awesome for a half day trip in the sound.
Captain Mike and John were both professional, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun to be around. They made us feel comfortable right away and clearly knew the best spots to fish. The boat itself was awesome. We especially appreciated the cabin, which offered a nice shaded spot to relax and enjoy the sandwiches we brought along.
It was a perfect day on the water, and we’ll definitely be recommending this charter to others. Thanks again to Captain Mike and John for helping make our dad’s birthday so memorable.
We did a 3hr tour. Even though we were in a slack tide, Captain Logan had us on the fish. We caught 4 HUGE striped bass. There were a lot of boats out there, but for whatever reason we were the only one catching anything. It was the perfect amount of time, Logan took care of everything other than reeling in the fish.
Would totally recommend it. Perfect with kids too, 9+.
What is the best month to go fishing in Connecticut?
Connecticut’s fishing really hits its stride in late spring and again in early fall, when migratory fish move through the Sound and the inshore bite stays active. May through July is the most reliable stretch, with Striped Bass, American Shad, and Smallmouth Bass all helping build a strong season before summer heats up. If you want a slightly later window, September keeps the action going with Bluefish (Tailor), Weakfish, and Little Tunny (False Albacore) pushing through.

Fishing with Joseph
The wind and water conditions of late spring/early summer transition can be a bit difficult. You can get 4+ ft seas even when the forecast calls for 1-2. The fish are great though
Striped Bass is a prime target in November in Connecticut for anglers who want a hard-fighting run that tests your drag and patience from shore or by boat. Tautog and Black Seabass are also in season, often drawing anglers to deeper, rocky water for steady bottom action. Brown Trout and Cod round out the options in Connecticut right now, giving you a chance to switch between freshwater-style pursuit and colder-water fishing.

Great family outing
Had a great time on an early season fishing trip with three generations of family (ages 13 to 77). Capt Mike and Chris were a great team and highly professional! Got 5 striped bass- 4 legal size (kept one- Chris cleaned it for us) and one enormous whopper! It didn't look like other boats were having as much luck so lots of credit to Mike and Chris for their fish-sense in getting us in the right spots with the right rigs. Definitely would go out again with them.
Marina offers easy access with covered parking.
Our group learned so much from Captain Creed and his mate, we caught some massive striped bass, and had an amazing time. Highly recommend if you're a first timer, or an experienced angler. They're very communicative before, during, and after the charter and work really hard to accommodate you and make sure everyone catches something. We can't wait to rebook!
Connecticut is a great place for kids to fish because families consistently report that they get plenty of chances to reel in fish, and the trips are set up for mixed experience levels. Many parents say the crews are accommodating and helpful with younger anglers and beginners, and kids tend to get excited when the cooler fills up with Striped Bass, Black Seabass, and Bluefish (Tailor). Reviews also mention that crews help with instruction and that catches are cleaned for the group.

Family outing
Great fishing trip for family with young kids. Both captain Mike and first mate John were great and very helpful with everyone in our group and made it a trip to remember, especially for our nine year old.
Fishing in Connecticut tends to work well for beginners because local trips often focus on simple inshore fishing around places like New London and Clinton, where you can get straight into the action. First-timers commonly find it approachable because crews handle basics like baiting hooks and helping with what to do next, and they’ll often target species such as Striped Bass, Bluefish (Tailor), and Black Seabass.

Always Hooking Something
I am a beginner fisher woman and I love that Allan was willing to bait the hook and take all those fish off the line for me. Allan is excellent working with beginners and he was incredibly helpful.
What should I bring on a fishing trip in Connecticut?
Connecticut trips can mean cool mornings on Long Island Sound, river runs, or lake fishing, so it pays to dress in layers and bring a light waterproof jacket if the forecast looks unsettled. The sun can still be strong on open water, and a pair of sunglasses plus sunscreen will make a long day out much easier. Nearly all local charters provide fishing gear, and the large majority also provide bait and lures, so you can usually travel light on tackle. A small cooler for drinks and any snacks you want on a full-day trip is a smart addition, and if you are heading offshore or spending a long time on the water, motion-sickness medicine is worth packing.
Is Connecticut good for fly fishing?
Yes - you can go fly fishing in Connecticut: a large share of the local charters run fly fishing trips. Many local charters also offer jigging, bottom fishing and trolling.
Connecticut offers a diverse and exciting fishing experience, blending productive saltwater action in Long Island Sound with well-managed freshwater fisheries. The state's coastal waters are renowned for Striped Bass, the most sought-after species that can grow over 50 pounds and even hold the world record. Anglers also regularly land Black Seabass, Bluefish, Flounder, Tautog, and Scup, with inshore reefs and estuaries providing consistent action from spring through fall[2][4][6].
Inland waters feature exceptional trout stocking programs yielding Brown, Rainbow, Tiger, and Brook Trout alongside thriving populations of Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, and Northern Pike[1]. Top destinations like Stamford, Old Lyme, Branford, and New London host experienced charters who handle licensing and provide specialized trips—whether targeting Stripers at dawn or bottom fishing for Seabass[1][3][5].
The Constitution State's comprehensive fishery management ensures sustainable opportunities year-round, with charters offering tailored experiences from light-tackle casting to deep-water trolling. Connecticut's accessibility to both novice and seasoned anglers makes it an underrated gem in the Northeast fishing scene[1][5][7].

I would highly recommend this charter to anyone looking for a fun, memorable fishing adventure. We would absolutely book again!

Quality trip
Captain put us on fish the entire trip. I caught a limit of keeper Seabass. Both captain and first mate were knowledgeable and very helpful. Definitely recommend to go fishing with this crew.

The captain tried his best
Even though we only caught one fish, our captain tried his best to give us a great experience. He was constantly switching lures, moving to different spots, and clearly knows his stuff. We really appreciated his effort!

First and Great!
This was first ever boat fishing experience for me and my son and we had great time. The capitan was helpful and knew where fish was, we got the first catch in less than 5 mins! Overall great time regardless of how much into fishing you are!

Great time with my boy!
Perfect 3 hour trip with my 9 year old son and close friend. Joe was awesome. He kept a close eye on my boy the entire time while I was fishing, to make sure he was doing exactly what he needed to do in order to have a successful day fishing. He ended up catching more than anyone of us! Wouldn't have it any other way! Now the plan is to have a fish fry tomorrow while watching some football. Will be going again next year.
