Halibut fishing in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada draws anglers to the Juan de Fuca Strait. Pacific Halibut are powerful Flatfish that live on sandy and gravel bottoms. Sooke’s strong tides funnel bait through the strait, bringing big fish close enough for local boats to reach in a day.

Most captains target Halibut by bottom fishing. They anchor or drift over known flats in 150–300 feet of water. Heavy tackle, sturdy rods, and large circle hooks are common. Baits often include herring, salmon heads, or octopus. Some crews add spreader bars and glow weights to keep the bait near the bottom and visible in deep water.

Trips usually run most of the day and start early to match the best tides. Your crew will handle the gear, the rigging, and the setup. This trip suits first-timers and seasoned anglers. Expect strong fights, steady pressure on the rod, and patient waits between bites. Dress in layers, bring a hat, sunscreen, and rain gear. Pack snacks and seasickness medicine if needed. A cooler in your car is handy for the ride home.

Before you go, check local rules. You may need a fishing license and a salmon conservation stamp if you plan to keep fish. Seasons, retention, and size rules can change. Ask your captain for the latest guidance and follow current regulations for this area.

    (1/2 day Salmon (AM) )

    fun day catching salmon

The captain is excellent and never stopped working his tail to off to do everything he could to catch fish. the boat is only 22 feet ling so it's tight for four anglers and tge captain. There is no head but it does have a cassette toilet. personally I wouldn't go halibut fishing on the boat but I woukd fish with the captain again.
