What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Cocoa Beach, Florida for the first time?

My trip happened when there was unseasonably cold weather and a string of storms the previous week that dropped the water temperatures. I would recommend that anglers not have unrealistic expectations that they will go out and catch dozens of big fish. If that happens consider yourself lucky. Focus on having a great time, learn from the guide and remember that sometimes the weather and fish don't cooperate, that's not the guide's fault.

I would recommend a short 2 hr trip like captain Joseph offers to get a feel for fishing the local lagoon and rivers area since there are plenty of quality fish within a short distance. Once you experience that then you will be better prepared for longer fishing periods and off shore fishing.

Definitely have a line of communication with the captain if you want to target a specific species do your research and know when is the best time to target them

Book some charters. I fished alone for some of the week and caught smaller fish. The fish that we caught on the fishing charters were fantastic and better than we hoped for.

Beats the weather in Kansas in winter. Even if we did not catch any fish, which we did, being on the water is a blessing!

Bring polarized glasses for fishing flats. You do a lot of sight fishing and polarized sunglasses make it way easier.

If your planning to eat your fish, your limited on what you can keep. Still had a great time catching them.

Warm temps can make it difficult to get on a lot of fish. We were targeting trophy sized fish per our request and we definitely had plenty of chances.

Definitely lose your fresh water habits! We had an awesome time catching some monters the entire morning.

It was helpful to hire a guide to show us spots where we’d have a better chance of catching fish. The guide’s local knowledge of the area was a game changer

Use a guide. I do a lot of fishing back home but it’s a different demon. The spots were different and places I’d never consider. Plus good sight seeing opportunities with guides

Late February 2023 - had some warmer than typically weather. The warm waters brought out some great fish.

We are from Indiana. Fishing in Cocoa Beach was different. We are so used to filling a bite and yanking the line. That is not how you fish at Cocoa Beach.

I myself have a history of “ you should have been here yesterday” it’s the same every where, get your line wet!!!

If you can't book Fishing Devotion, then hire one of the other local guides. We met a couple of them when we were fishing with Fishing Devotion, and they are all great guys.

Look to catch snook and black drum. The jacks are fun to catch, but aren’t eating fish.

The water is a bit colder than usual so the bite was slower. But still a good time!

Our captain said this time of year is a bit slower for fish but the weather was gorgeous!
