Fly Fishing in Oregon Coast
Long gone are the days when fly anglers would just stick to fresh waters and ignore all the excitement found in saltwater fisheries. Oregon’s fly fishing enthusiasts have embraced the saltwater to great success! If you’re more interested in what the freshwater has to offer, check out our Oregon fly fishing page.
What type of trip is right for me?
The sprawling coastline is home to many bays that make for a great introduction to the local fishing scene. However, if you know your way around a fly rod and then some, you might be interested to see how you can put it to good use offshore, as well.
Half Day Trips
Shorter trips are intended for easy to reach places like Tillamook Bay and the coastal reaches of the Columbia River. This mostly involves fishing for the likes of Steelhead Trout as well as Chinook and Coho Salmon.
Full Day Trips
Eight-hour trips and longer are where things get interesting. Offshore fishing charters in places like Astoria have a very unique offer – fly fishing for Albacore Tuna. Summer and early fall is when these fish are closest to shore, making it a perfect time to strike. It’s still a 70-mile ride, but more than worth it for the opportunity.
How to Prepare
Albacore fly fishing is strictly BYO gear. This means you’ll need a 12–14 wt rod if you want to get in on the action. Regardless of exactly where you’re fishing, you’ll also need a fishing license for all anglers ages 12 and older.
Whether it’s a calm day of bay fishing or adrenaline-pumping Tuna action you’re after, the Oregon Coast is the place to be!
