Fishing in Quepos

Three rivers flow to the ocean in Quepos, Costa Rica, and we all know what that means – excellent fishing! Hit the bays and estuaries inshore and get your fill of action, but that’s not all! The nearshore reefs and deep waters offshore are all within reach, and there are plenty of Quepos fishing charters waiting to take you to them. Come and target some of the most prized fish in the world!

Don’t believe us? Roosterfish grow to incredible sizes inshore, and that’s just the beginning. Jacks, Snook, and Mackerel are also possible catches! Hit the reefs for non-stop bottom fishing action, with Snappers and Groupers stealing the show and your line here.

However, if you’re looking for the fight of your life and a real trophy to boot, you’ll want to head offshore. The deep waters of the Pacific hold plenty of monster Marlin, stunning Sailfish, and impressive Wahoo. And not only that, but you can also go after Tuna and Mahi Mahi to bring back for a beachside BBQ.

Inshore and nearshore trips can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day, with shorter trips being most suitable for families and beginners. However, serious anglers simply must take advantage of the offshore bite that goes on year-round. Book at least eight hours to get out to the deep, or you could even take advantage of multi-day trips. Whatever you want, there’s a fishing charter in Marina Pez Vela for you!

Rules & Regulations

Every angler on a Quepos fishing charter will need a license to cast their line. Check with your captain if they can arrange one for you. If not, the process is pretty simple on INCOPESCA’s website. Other than that, you should also know that Roosterfish and Billfish are all catch-and-release.

Quepos Fishing Seasons

January

Kick off the year with screaming drag and multiple hookups of Wahoo, Sailfish, and Mahi Mahi, with the constant chance of a Marlin making each bite even more exciting.

February

Can you think of anything more romantic than cruising out to the beautiful beaches of Tortuga Island next Valentine's Day? How about battling monster pelagics offshore? OK, Maybe not romantic, but certainly fun!

March

March is the driest month of the year in Costa Rica, making for great fishing both inshore and offshore. Sight fish for Roosterfish and Snook inshore, or troll for Billfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi offshore.

April

April is tournament season in Quepos, with the IGFA World Championships taking center stage among the many Billfishing competitions in the area. This also makes April a very expensive time to visit.

May

Blue Marlin really hit their stride in Quepos by May, joined by big Yellowfin Tuna and the permanent populations of Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo. The reefs and shallows are also packed with great fish.

June

The high chance of rain can sometimes wash out the best fishing offshore, but you can always hit the reefs for some tasty Snapper. If you're up for a fight, fish the river mouths for big Roosterfish.

July

The rain usually drops off slightly in July, ahead of the biggest downpours of rainy season. Blue and Black Marlin are both around in big numbers this time of year, so take your chance and get out there!

August

August is much the same as any month in Quepos, meaning that it's amazing! Fish inshore for Roosterfish, Snook, and Jacks, hit the reefs for Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda, or head offshore for big Billfish.

September

All of Central America gained independence on the same day in 1821. These days, September 15 is celebrated with parades, fairs, music, and dancing. Combine your angling adventure with a fiesta!

October

The bite may slow up offshore in October, but things never get dull inshore. You could spend the rest of your life here and never get bored of the awesome inshore species like Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper.

November

The rain finally drops off in November, making heading offshore more feasible. As always, you'll be met by a great mixed group of pelagic species, including Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Marlin.

December

Beautiful green countryside, a sunny 85 degrees, world-class fishing.. if Quepos isn't at the top of your list for the holiday season it certainly should be! It won't exactly be a White Christmas, but you'll manage.

What anglers said about fishing in Quepos

For us it was a great experience in July because we got calm seas and only rain on our way back. Weather in CR is unpredictable but for us it worked out perfectly

Don’t think you know more than the captain. Listen to there advice, go where they recommend and fish for what they recommend. Bait fish, why spend time catching bait fish? Because the fish you are fishing for like live fish and the little time you spend doing that usually pays off!

Unfortunately we are here during a Red Alge bloom. It made fishing a little difficult, but when we started to hit the Tuna it turned around.

It’s the rainforest. Don’t be surprised if it rains or is hot and humid. The drop off of the continental shelf is over 20 miles off shore. If you’re going off shore expect a very long boat ride.

Basically, there are all price ranges, if you want the big pretty boats, you’re gonna pay for it! The smaller boats are the real deal and you’ll get your fish!

Expect to catch fish but don’t have too high expectations for specific species because a lot of luck is required. When your captain and crew puts in the work to make it a successful trip, that can make a big difference if you walk away disappointed or not.

It went really smoothly. They are renovating the parking lot to the marina but there were extra spaces. The marina is set up with a great spot to meet your captains so no worries about finding the boat in the AM.

Book with Naudi Ventures, you will not be disappointed. The captain knows what’s bitting and where to find them . We were hoping to get Mahi but if they aren’t here we understand. The tuna and sailfish were a fantastic experience. Several boats around us not catching fish , as I said before they know how to catch them . We hope to come back next year for another wonderful day on the ocean .

We had a great full-day out with Captain Jeff and Jose. We caught five tuna, a sailfish and a rainbow runner. We have been on several boats and this is a great one for a smaller group (4 or less). It was impressive to watch them pull in bait fish and then quickly find the tuna. Thank you for a great day and looking forward to going out with you again.

This was our first offshore trip and Jeff and Jose made it a great one. They were patient and full of knowledge on fishing in Costa Rica. My son was able to catch two of the three species he wanted to catch. We ended up taking home 3 Yellow Fin Tuna and 1 Mahi Mahi. I definitely recommend Bucket List Sportsfishing to eveyone.

Greiven and his team worked hard on a slow day to put us on some fish. The sailfish I caught was worth every penny. Thanks Grey’s Fishing Tours for the memory of a lifetime!

It was a wet and rainy day which we knew could be a possibility. That’s what you sign up for when you go fishing. But Wahoo didn’t disappoint. The captain and deck hand were knowledgeable, courteous, and great hosts always offering food and drinks. And they delivered on the fish! My 12-year old son and I both caught larger sail fish - a first for both of us! And they both hit at the same time which was a unique experience. Such a great trip!
