Three rivers flow to the ocean in Quepos, Costa Rica, and we all know what that means – excellent fishing! Hit the bays and estuaries inshore and get your fill of action, but that’s not all! The nearshore reefs and deep waters offshore are all within reach, and there are plenty of Quepos fishing charters waiting to take you to them. Come and target some of the most prized fish in the world!

Don’t believe us? Roosterfish grow to incredible sizes inshore, and that’s just the beginning. Jacks, Snook, and Mackerel are also possible catches! Hit the reefs for non-stop bottom fishing action, with Snappers and Groupers stealing the show and your line here.

However, if you’re looking for the fight of your life and a real trophy to boot, you’ll want to head offshore. The deep waters of the Pacific hold plenty of monster Marlin, stunning Sailfish, and impressive Wahoo. And not only that, but you can also go after Tuna and Mahi Mahi to bring back for a beachside BBQ.

Inshore and nearshore trips can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day, with shorter trips being most suitable for families and beginners. However, serious anglers simply must take advantage of the offshore bite that goes on year-round. Book at least eight hours to get out to the deep, or you could even take advantage of multi-day trips. Whatever you want, there’s a fishing charter in Marina Pez Vela for you!

Rules & Regulations

Every angler on a Quepos fishing charter will need a license to cast their line. Check with your captain if they can arrange one for you. If not, the process is pretty simple on INCOPESCA’s website. Other than that, you should also know that Roosterfish and Billfish are all catch-and-release.

January

Kick off the year with screaming drag and multiple hookups of Wahoo, Sailfish, and Mahi Mahi, with the constant chance of a Marlin making each bite even more exciting.

February

Can you think of anything more romantic than cruising out to the beautiful beaches of Tortuga Island next Valentine's Day? How about battling monster pelagics offshore? OK, Maybe not romantic, but certainly fun!

March

March is the driest month of the year in Costa Rica, making for great fishing both inshore and offshore. Sight fish for Roosterfish and Snook inshore, or troll for Billfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi offshore.

April

April is tournament season in Quepos, with the IGFA World Championships taking center stage among the many Billfishing competitions in the area. This also makes April a very expensive time to visit.

May

Blue Marlin really hit their stride in Quepos by May, joined by big Yellowfin Tuna and the permanent populations of Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo. The reefs and shallows are also packed with great fish.

June

The high chance of rain can sometimes wash out the best fishing offshore, but you can always hit the reefs for some tasty Snapper. If you're up for a fight, fish the river mouths for big Roosterfish.

July

The rain usually drops off slightly in July, ahead of the biggest downpours of rainy season. Blue and Black Marlin are both around in big numbers this time of year, so take your chance and get out there!

August

August is much the same as any month in Quepos, meaning that it's amazing! Fish inshore for Roosterfish, Snook, and Jacks, hit the reefs for Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda, or head offshore for big Billfish.

September

All of Central America gained independence on the same day in 1821. These days, September 15 is celebrated with parades, fairs, music, and dancing. Combine your angling adventure with a fiesta!

October

The bite may slow up offshore in October, but things never get dull inshore. You could spend the rest of your life here and never get bored of the awesome inshore species like Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper.

November

The rain finally drops off in November, making heading offshore more feasible. As always, you'll be met by a great mixed group of pelagic species, including Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Marlin.

December

Beautiful green countryside, a sunny 85 degrees, world-class fishing.. if Quepos isn't at the top of your list for the holiday season it certainly should be! It won't exactly be a White Christmas, but you'll manage.

Get some inshore Roosters/Snappers & Jacks early, then try everything on offer - you can bottom fish species hunting inshore (and off-shore), or go after off-shore Bill-fish where the whole spectrum of lure taking hard fighting fish including Wahoo, Dorado, Jacks, Tuna, Amberjack and Rainbow Runners are present for most of the year.

Do this trip with an open mind - enjoy the full experience without focusing completely on the catch you personally want. Jackpot's commitment to conservation- keeping the game fish catch in the water - quick and safe release is commendable.

100% recommended, the sportfishing in Costa Rica is excellent, all year you can to catch sailfish, mahi mahi or tunas. Also the inshore fishing is very good for roosterfish, mackarele and red snapper. Is better that you write by e-mail to Martin, the operation manager, he is like a friend in Costa Rica.

Great trip with Jeff and Jose! They know how to fish! Gear is top notch We got 3 sailfish and 1 blue marlin. We lost another fish and had 4-5 other opportunities at billfish! We took our wives on this trip. They had a great time watching dolphins, whales and got their first sailfish! I have fished many places and this trip was one of the best! Highly recommended!!

This trip was amazing. Caught a couple monster Mahi Mahi (which we had a restaurant in the marina cook for us at the recommendation of the Captain). Hooked into some Sailfish. The Captain and his first mate were experts. Also very patient and accommodating considering I’m a novice at salt water fishing. 10/10 would recommend!! Thanks to the Captain and his first mate!!

We had a group of 4 from Minnesota for a near shore adventure. Christian and Birget were extremely helpful and professional. The caption and crew were experienced and we were able to wrangle 9 nice Mahi into the boat. We have chartered several boats out of Quepos in the past and 3 Brothers and the crew definitely delivered for us! We would absolutely book with them again😎

Can’t say enough great things about our day on the Bucket List. The Captain and mate’s expertise and experience were apparent from start to finish. The fish weren’t biting at first but as soon as they started we quickly caught our limit of tuna and mahi. To top it off they found a few billfish. Couldn’t have asked for better day. We brought 50+ lbs of fish home from vacation, amazing.

We spent the whole day trip trolling about 5 miles out. After the first 5-10 mahi we were ready to go for something else. Not too sound ungrateful, but we were ready to target a new species. We stayed and did the same exact thing. Ended up catching nearly 35 mahi. With that being said, if I pay for a full day I expect to target billfish/rooster after catching the same fish for almost 9 hours. Book half day with them OR MAKE IT A POINT AT THE DOCK WHAT YOU WANT TO FISH FOR

On 11/3/2021, a group of 3 of us went on a 3/4 day trip with Bucket List. We had a great, successful, fun day! The seas were pretty rough, but being from Wyoming, we are use to rough conditions. It didn't stop Captain Jeff and his mate Jose (skinny man). They toughed it out right along with us and led us on to catch many Dorado. Will definitely rebook with Bucket List when back in Costa Rica. 100% recommend!!!

We’ve never had much luck on fishing charters. However that was definitely not the case this time around! We started catching Mahi 10 minutes after the lines were in - we caught 8+ Mahi before noon. We weren’t expecting to catch any sailfish after being told it’s been slow, but we landed 5!! All were 80-120 lbs. This was definitely an amazing experience and Jose was awesome

Weather and some finicky fish stopped us from an excellent day aboard the the Good Day but still landed some nice fish including my first sail. That's not to say the experience wasn't excellent! Owner/mate Benn walked us through every step... from bait, to spreaders, to teasers, to tactics. I've been out a few times before and was impressed. I will be going back to Costa Rica and will call Benn and the Good Day first!

Captain and crew were amazing. Great boat. Perfect tackle and equipment. Worked hard to get us on fish and when changed plans when necessary. Ended up with tired arms from reeling in tuna after catching a nice sailfish. Great job and I would highly recommend this captain and his impressive boat.

We had a great day. The crew took excellent care of us. Our 13 year old son caught a Pacific Sailfish, we also caught a Dorado (mahi-mahi), and Bonita. We didn’t get a lot of bites but it was a successful day, in addition to the fish we caught we saw numerous sea turtles, dolphins and even a humpback whale. It was memorable day that we are sure to carry with us for all time.

Turn key, Christian meet us in the morning and greeted us when we returned. All beverages were available and lunch was great. Coco our first mate offered snacks often and constantly worked the baits, a real pro. Our captain Tojo but us on fish and was a master if backing down on the fish. My only suggestions would be , need drink holders and beers cozys. You need your hands to reel all the fish in and don’t want your beer getting warm. 1 blue marlin 1 sailfish and six tuna keepers. Great day!!!

We fished the Good Day with Captain Manuel and Mate Santos. Early in the day we hooked up to a 100# Tuna, fought it for an hour but lost it at the boat. During the fight we were visited by a school of Pilot whales yards from the boat. Fishing slowed down, but Capt Manuel didn't give up. Without having to ask or say a word they stayed overtime till we hooked and released a 7' sailfish. We will definitly fish with these guys next time were in Quepos.
