Fishing in Frankfort

If you’re planning your next Great Lakes fishing adventure, Frankfort is a scenic destination you don’t want to miss. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city features pristine beaches, spectacular sunsets, and fantastic fishing opportunities. So if you’re keen on catching some fish in this beautiful area, Frankfort fishing charters will give you all the local guidance you need.

The first charter boats start appearing in Frankfort around the beginning of May. In the early season, the waters are teeming with Brown Trout and Lake Trout, as well as some Steelhead and Chinook Salmon. With waters getting warmer, you’ll see plenty of Steelhead action near the surface, making this a great time to fish for these silvery torpedoes.

The beginning of summer marks the start of the Salmon frenzy. Big Chinook Salmon will be making their way through the waters, slowly heading closer and closer to Frankfort shores. Tough-fighting and absolutely delicious, reeling in a King Salmon is something every angler should experience. Towards the end of the summer, Coho Salmon and Steelhead action usually picks up again. As the winter hits, some of the local guides will start offering ice fishing trips.

For beginners eager to get a taste of Lake Michigan, or families looking to make memories, a half day trip will provide a great introduction to this amazing fishery. However, if you plan on fishing for trophy King Salmon, you’ll want more time on the water to maximize your chances. Charter captains in Frankfort are mostly located along the Betsie Lake waterfront, giving you easy access to Lake Michigan.

Rules & Regulations

Each angler aged 17 or older will need to purchase a Michigan fishing license whether they’re fishing onboard a charter or solo. You can buy the license online and check if you qualify for any exemptions.

Frankfort Fishing Seasons

January

While charter boats are all winterized at this time, January is a great time to go ice fishing if you’re not afraid of the cold. Crystal Lake and Platte Lake are both good local options.

February

Ice fishing is still the name of the game. You could be hooking into some Walleye on Platte Lake or some Perch on Crystal Lake.

March

The waters are starting to heat up at this time. While it’s still early for charter boats to get out there, fishing the Betsie River could net you some Steelhead.

April

Starting mid-April, you could be seeing a few charter boats in the area. During this time of the year, you’ll be hooking into Brown Trout, Lake Trout, and possibly Coho Salmon.

May

May marks the beginning of the charter fishing season in Frankfort. Lake Trout, Brown Trout, and Steelhead are all in the cards. You could also be hooking into an occasional Chinook Salmon.

June

With the temperatures steadily rising, Steelhead make their way closer to surface waters. You’ll see plenty of action while trolling with double or even triple hits happening at times.

July

The King Salmon season has arrived! While July may not be as popular as August, it’s often equally productive. So get out on the water and go trolling for these prestigious fish.

August

This is the peak time to be hunting for trophy King Salmon! They are moving closer to Frankfort shores, making it easy to reach them. Hop on a charter and try to catch your limit of these majestic fish.

September

You should still be seeing solid Chinook Salmon action during this time. As the Kings make their way up Betsie River, you’ll start seeing some Coho Salmon, as well as Steelhead return.

October

Most charter captains will be preparing for the winter at this time. If you manage to find some who are still running trips, October should provide you with plenty of Steelhead, Coho, and Chinook action.

November

If you’re interested in flyfishing, the fall is a great time to try fishing Betsie River. You could be hooking into some Steelhead as they move through these waters.

December

Fly fishing for Steelhead is a good option as long as there’s no ice. Towards the end of December, the local lakes will be freezing over, so check if there are any guides offering ice fishing.

What anglers said about fishing in Frankfort

Late August, after most kids go back to school, the mass tourism dies down and the place isn’t crowded. There are tons of King salmon in the bay, but they can be hit or miss on the bite as they get wise to fishing pressure and/or shift to spawn mode (the only reason the rating isn’t 5 stars)

You can never depend on mother nature. Always bring appropriate clothing. If you're river or boat fishing, don't always expect to go home with your limit. It is the experience in the knowledge you gain that is beneficial.

Be sure you are going when the waters in lake michigan in the Frankfort area are sufficiently warm enough, if you are targeting salmon or lake trout. I learned that the bait fish scram to warmer waters elsewhere, and the salmon and lake trout will follow thier food.
