Fishing in Oregon Inlet

Positioned in the heart of the Outer Banks, Oregon Inlet fishing charters can take you on all kinds of angling adventures. Whether you'd like to explore the epic coastal waters of the OBX or head into the Gulf Stream, it's all possible here. But most importantly, you'll be in for some of the best fishing in the world whichever way you turn.

Inside the inlet, there are numerous creeks, sounds, and marshes you can explore. These calm waters provide hiding places for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Flounder, Sheepshead, and other inshore species. The action takes place throughout the year, but if you want to reel in Bull Reds, it's best to visit during late summer and fall.

Exit Oregon Inlet and you'll have access to various reefs a few miles offshore. These house Black Seabass, Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and other bottom dwellers. Depending on the season, you'll also spot Cobia, Barracuda, Sharks, and King Mackerel on the reefs.

For deep sea enthusiasts, the Gulf Stream lies only 35 miles from shore. Beginning in May, pelagics such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Marlin can be hooked in these waters. Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna can also be caught from spring to late fall, while big Bluefin can be wrestled during wintertime.

All in all, there'll be fish to catch no matter when you visit this part of North Carolina. You can find charter captains offering trips both from Oregon Inlet itself and nearby Wanchese and Manteo. Half day trips will give you enough time for inshore fishing, but you'll need more time for offshore outings.

Rules & Regulations

In North Carolina, anglers aged 16 and up will need licenses if fishing solo. On charter boats, your captain will cover you so you can focus on fishing. Most fish species have size and bag limits, so make sure you keep only what's legal.

Oregon Inlet Fishing Seasons

January

After welcoming the new year, things get a bit quiet around the inlet. This means you can peacefully fish inshore, or head out to go after some big Bluefin Tuna – if the weather allows.

February

February is still well within Tuna season! It’s your best chance to go deep sea fishing after huge Bluefin Tuna, as well as Yellowfin. Be ready for a longer trip to reach the honey holes, though.

March

As winter finally draws to a close, you can see the inshore action picking up. If you’re late for the Tuna party, don’t worry, there are still Yellowfins out there in the Gulf Stream.

April

Redfish are biting inshore! You’ll also have a good time if you decide on tackling Black Drum and Trout. Offshore, Yellowfin Tuna will be biting, with the occasional Mahi or Wahoo taking the bait, too.

May

As we’re getting ready for summer, you’ll notice that the offshore bite is improving quite a lot. Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin, and Blackfin Tuna are all great fishing options.

June

Summertime brings some excellent fishing with it. Anything from Mahi Mahi and Amberjack to Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and many, many more. The inshore bite is also on fire, so there'll be fish to catch wherever you go.

July

Offshore fishing is still at its peak, with Billfish, King Mackerel, and Mahi Mahi all biting. Inshore, Spotted Seatrout and Bluefish are the way to go, though you can expect other species to gobble up your bait as well.

August

If you’re up for a longer trip, you’ll have a blast in the deep sea waters. Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, along with different kinds of Tuna will keep you entertained. Inshore, you'll see Bull Reds enter Oregon Inlet!

September

The fact that the weather’s cooling a bit won’t impact your fishing experience at all! Billfishing is as great as ever offshore, while you’ve got plenty of Bull Reds inshore.

October

October is a good time to catch Bull Reds before they leave the inlet. Offshore, Yellowfin Tuna make a grand return, making this month one of the best times of the year to reel them in.

November

As the waters cool down, you can expect Redfish to bite even harder. Otherwise, you can go offshore for a chance at Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, King Mackerel, and maybe even an early Bluefin.

December

As the year draws to a close, you’ll see the Black Drum and Redfish bite staying strong inshore. In the Gulf Stream, the Bluefin Tuna season officially kicks off, setting stage for some of the most epic battles you can find.

Plan your trip a couple days before the end of your visit in case weather hits and you have to reschedule. Pop up storms can definitely change your plans . Bring cash . The credit card app charges a pretty hefty processing fee. Be positive and enjoy the fresh air and time on the water if you don’t hook one. This time of year is definitely geared more towards a morning or late evening time frame if you have kids that aren’t accustomed to the heat.

A wonderful pair provided us with a great experience all around, the weather even cooperated! They explained all the interesting bits for the kids, and made sure they were the ones pulling them in. We caught three different kinds of fish and had plenty for a delicious dinner at home, thank you!

Had a great time on the fish advisor, beautiful weather on a nice fast boat. Fishing was a little slow but thats why its calling fishing and not catching 😉 My dad and I had some great conversations with the captain and shared lots of laughs the whole day. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for a fun time.

My buddy and i took our 14 year old sons out for their first ocean fishing experience. Captain Chris was awesome! He was very informative and knowledgeable and made sure everyone was catching fish and having a great experience. I have been fishing for over 40 years and this charter tops the list!

Captain Chris was personal, kind, and very knowledgeable. He made everything very easy for a novice fisher woman like myself. It was a beautiful morning on the sound. He even took the extra time at the end to show me how to clean my own fish (he cleans them for you but I wanted to learn). I can't wait to book him again!

We had an awesome time. The guys were great with our kids. We got way more seafood than we could eat in a week. It was a really cool experience!

We caught several Spanish Mackerel and a couple flounders. Very nice and knowledgeable crew. Nice day on the boat and pretty informative for beginners. Next time we’ll look for something more hands on and challenging.

Did a 10:30 near shore trip with my son, his friends, and their Dads and we had a great time. Captain Jack and Mason were beyond friendly, the boat was fantastic, and we had a successful day. Wish we could have stayed out another 4 hours. Will definitely repeat if we have the chance. Highly recommend!

Enjoyed our trip with Captain TW and Jackson. While it was hot and we couldn’t find the fish, the two of them made it enjoyable as possible as we moved around looking for the bite.

There wasn't alot of action but Captain Lewis always makes for a fun trip regardless if the fish are biting or not. My two boys always enjoy a trip out on the Revival. I Highly recommend Waymaker Charters for any type trip you decide to take.
