Fishing in Port Aransas

Port Aransas fishing charters face a difficult question each day: In, or out? Turn one way for the sprawling shallows of the Corpus Christi and Redfish Bays. Turn the other for nearshore reefs and the deep bluewaters of the Gulf of Mexico. Decisions, decisions.

Inshore trips are perfect for kids and beginners. They usually last four hours, fishing the bay for Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. Catch them with live bait or try lures for an extra challenge. The inshore bite is slower in winter, but you can catch tasty fish all year round.

If good eating is your priority, try bottom fishing for Red Snapper around the reefs. You can catch them year-round in local waters. However, the bite is best during the federal Snapper season in June and July. Nearshore charters are ideal for older kids and anyone who likes delicious fish.

Think you’ve got what it takes to fight the fiercest fish in the sea? Head offshore in search of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish, and even Marlin. Offshore charters last anywhere from eight hours to several days. They’re best in summer, but you can find fish all year if you go far enough.

Port Aransas holds several fishing tournaments each year. The most important one is the Deep Sea Roundup, held each July. Running since 1932, this is the oldest tournament in the Gulf. Target anything from Redfish and Trout to Sailfish and Tuna in this fun-focused event.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers aged 17 or over need to buy a license to fish in Texas. You also need a Red Drum tag to keep Redfish over 28 inches. Be aware that Red Snapper have a short open season in federal waters, usually starting in early June. You can catch them all year long in Texas state waters, though.

Port Aransas Fishing Seasons

January

January in Port Aransas can be changeable weather-wise, with some warm and sunny days interspersed with cool rainy ones. Redfish and Trout can be sluggish but Sheepshead is always a good option at this time of year.

February

This can be the coolest and rainiest month of the year, but it can still have days in the 60s and 70s. Fish for Trout on the flats, Redfish in the potholes, and Black Drum and Sheepshead around the piers.

March

March is a windy month, but experienced guides can use this to their advantage. Big Trout start to show up in channels and deeper flats, whie Redfish are caught on the flats. Nearshore, Jack Crevalle and Kingfish are in action.

April

Another windy month, April in Port Aransas is the height of spring fishing. Limits of Speckled Trout and Redfish are common. After your fishing trip, take the family to the Texas Sand Fest.

May

Temperatures increase to a steady 80 - 85 degrees by the end of the month and the beaches and waterways get busy. Look out for full bags of Redfish and big Speckled Trout on the flats and in the bay.

June

The federal Red Snapper season opens, making federally-permitted charter boats high in demand. Farther out, things are even better, with Tuna, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi and even Marlin showing up around the oil rigs.

July

July begins with a bang in Port Aransas, as 4th of July celebrations bring the town to life. Don't miss the Deep Sea Roundup if you're feeling competitive. Offshore, Blackfin Tuna is biting around shrimp boats.

August

Limits of Speckled Trout and Redfish are on the cards in the bay, while offshore fishing is on fire. Catches of big Mahi Mahi, Blackfin Tuna, King Mackerel, Barracuda, Sharks, and Cobia are common.

September

Bull Redfish start to migrate into the bays, making this one of the best months for inshore fishing. And what with reduced crowds and a hot bite offshore as well, you could say this is one of the best times to fish in Port Aransas.

October

The Bull Redfish bite gets better and better around the jetties. Flounder and Trout are on top form, while offshore there is still a chance of Mahi Mahi, Blackfin Tuna, and even Billfish if you travel far enough.

November

Bay fishing is excellent, with large numbers of Redfish, Trout, Black Drum, and Flounder. Flounder can only be caught with hook and line this month. Offshore, people are catching Kingfish, Tuna, and the occasional Wahoo.

December

Poor weather conditions offshore can make bay fishing the most attractive option. Big Black Drum and State water Red Snapper can be caught nearshore. Look for a guide with a shallow boat to catch Redfish on the flats.
