Fishing in Texas

If you’ve spent any time in the “Lone Star State,” you know that angling here is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life. People from all over the country come here to cast a line, and a lot of them use the help of Texas fishing charters. Whether you’d like to explore the rich inshore waters or focus on reef and offshore fishing, there’s a charter out there with your name on it.

Redfish, Flounder, Speckled Trout, Sheepshead, and Jack Crevalle are just some of the most frequently caught inshore species. The freshwater bite in the lakes is also fantastic, with Bass species, Crappie, and Catfish providing both quantity and quality.

Offshore and rig fishing enthusiasts will have a blast in Texan waters. The coastline is littered with artificial reefs, wrecks, and oil rigs full of Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, and Amberjack. Head out even further, and you’ll find big game legends like Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna.

Once you decide what you’d like to do, it’s time to pick that perfect trip. Shorter inshore runs on a skiff are perfect for family fishing jaunts, as is lake fishing in any form. More ambitious anglers can explore oil rig fisheries that boast brag worthy and delectable catches. For that ultimate sportfishing experience, spend a whole day chasing bluewater species.

With such a diverse angling scene, fishing tournaments are an everyday occurrence, literally. Just pick a known fishing location, and there will be a tournament there at some point during the year. Some of the top spots to find Texas fishing charters are Corpus Christi, Galveston, Lake Texoma, Sam Rayburn Reservoir, and many many others.

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses aren’t usually included on Texas fishing charters, so you’ll need to buy the right one before the start of your trip. Everyone who’s 17 and older needs a valid license. Bear in mind that you need a separate license to fish Lake Texoma.

Texas Fishing Seasons

January

Low temperatures make many species sluggish this time of year. There’s never a bad time for Trout fishing in Texas, though. There are also huge Catfish and Crappie in the rivers, and Snook in the southern lagoons.

February

The weather can make offshore charters unreliable in February, but Snook and Trout will keep you busy inshore. Inland, Crappie, Bass, and Catfish are all on form – all you have to do is pick your spot.

March

Texas Gulf Coast fishing produces Trout and Redfish by the dozens in March. You can still catch big numbers of Sheepshead in the North or Snook in the South. Crappie usually spawn this time of year.

April

April is a transitional month in Texas, with fish on the move throughout the state. This means you have decent chances of bagging most species. Largemouth Bass are great in the spring, as well as any other inshore species you can think of.

May

It’s getting hot in Texas! The Texas STAR tournament kicks off in May, beginning over 3 months of inshore action. In deeper waters, anything from Sharks and Mahi Mahi to Sailfish and Blackfin Tuna is biting.

June

Amberjack may be off the menu, but the federal Red Snapper season is open! You can also find big game species like Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin offshore this time of year. Inshore action remains on point!

July

The Port Aransas Deep Sea Roundup has been running for over 80 years, and still draws big crowds in search of even bigger fish. Inshore, the “Big Three” are all hungry, making for great flats action.

August

Amberjack are usually open for harvest again by this time of year. One thing you can be sure of is monster Tuna and Mahi Mahi out in the bluewater. Oh, and an army of Bull Redfish in the shallows.

September

If you fancy battling the “Silver King” in Texas, September is a good time to try. You’ll have to head out further than you’d expect to find them, but it’s well worth it when you spot that silvery shimmer.

October

October is the last big push for pelagic fish offshore. Catch your share of Tuna, King Mackerel, and Snapper while you still can. Inshore, you can always find plenty of Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. This is also your last chance to enjoy Texas Shark fishing.

November

Sheepshead pick up as the weather cools down, and big Blue Catfish start showing up in the rivers. Down in South Padre, Snook fishing starts to improve, and will only get better as winter rolls in.

December

The weather has cooled to perfect flats fishing temperatures in December, with the waters still warm enough to produce some good fights. Redfish, Snook, and Trout are all on the menu. The Crappie fishing Texas is so famous for heats up this time of year.

Jason let us know that this time of year there were many more smaller fish in the lake. We caught quite a few small ones, but had many larger catches to take home as well. We really didn't care as it was just fun catching the fish!

It tends to get pretty warm by midday and I think the angle of the sun affects the fish, forcing them deep under cover. For summer fishing, I think it makes sense to get started around 6 am and finish up by 10 - 10:30.

Understand the creel limits. 3 trout per person limit is pretty surprising given the 15 per person limit in Louisiana

Plenty of options between the bay and the gulf. We hit the Snapper during the spawn which made fishing challenging but we still had plenty of action.
