Frequently Asked Questions about Fishing Charters in Port Douglas

Fishing in Port Douglas

Port Douglas is easily one of the most popular fishing destinations in Australia. With the Great Barrier Reef at your disposal, and bluewater brimming with all kinds of game fish, how could it not be? You might come here for a vacation, but you’ll be blown away by the premier bite. That’s where Port Douglas fishing charters come in.

This part of Queensland is nestled next to vibrant reefs which are home to hundreds of fish species. Coral Trout, Trevally, Nannygai, Red Emperor Snapper and Narrow-Barred Mackerel are common catches in this area. Head beyond the Great Barrier, and you’ll be in the realm of grander Black Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo and Giant Trevally.

Fishing closer to shore on local rivers and estuaries is also very productive. This is where you go to hook into Barramundi, Queenfish, Permit, Tarpon, Threadfin Salmon, Fingermark Bream and Mangrove Jack.

Whichever fishery you decide to explore, there’s a Port Douglas fishing charter to help you out. Half day trips are a popular choice when you’re in the mood for excellent reef fishing with your family or you’d like to land something good in the inshore waters. Longer expeditions will take you further away from shore and put you on the trail of impressive trophy catches.

If you’re wondering where to go to get a taste of the Port Douglas angling action, head to Wharf Street and Ashford Avenue, where you’ll find a good number of charters ready to take you out.

Rules & Regulations

You don’t need a license to fish recreationally in Port Douglas. Size and bag limits do apply to some species, and these may vary depending on the season. Always be aware of local regulations regarding where you can and cannot cast lines, whether on land or by boat.

Port Douglas Fishing Seasons

January

Game fishing is strong during the Australian summer. The inshore bite is excellent, with Barramundi, Queenfish, and Mangrove Jacks on the menu. Tuna, Wahoo, Giant Trevally and Marlin are also on the cards. Be prepared for heavy rains, with the possibility of cyclones.

February

The wet season continues, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying great fishing for Giant Trevally. On the reefs, you’re likely to catch Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Mackerel, Nannygai. Adrenaline seekers can target Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and, of course, Giant Trevally.

March

The peak season for game fishing is winding down, but the reefs and rivers still provide plenty of opportunities. You can fish inshore for Barramundi, Queenfish and Fingermark Bream, as well as Nannygai, Snapper and Mackerel around the reefs.

April

This time of year, you can still enjoy fishing the reefs, rivers and estuaries. The rainy season has ended, which means you’ll have beautiful days to target anything from Coral Trout and Cobia to GT and Tuna. Let’s not forget about Threadfin Salmon, Barramundi and Queenfish.

May

May is the break between peak seasons. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do on the water – you’re still likely to catch Nannygai, Coral Trout and Red Emperor in addition to all inshore species.

June

Come June, more and more fish are active in all fisheries. Reef fishing and inshore fishing are picking up momentum, with Queenfish, Red Emperor Snapper, Nannygai and Trevally biting more frequently. Sailfish, Tuna and Trevally are starting to appear more often offshore.

July

Reef fishing is in full swing, with very high chances of catching excellent Coral Trout, Nannygai, Red Emperor and Mackerel. This is a great time to go out and spend a day chasing Sailfish, Mackerel and Red Emperor Snapper and try out different angling techniques.

August

The long-awaited game fishing season is back! There’s no limit to what you can find at the end of your line these days – Sharks, Trevally, Tuna, Wahoo and Sailfish are all fair game. Closer to land, you can look forward to Fingermark Bream, Nannygai and Queenfish.

September

The Black Marlin breeding season has begun, and every major game fish is biting! This marks the beginning of the best time for fishing in Port Douglas, with pleasant weather and lots of fish. If you’ve got your eyes on landing a personal record, September is the time to come.

October

Now is the time to get out on the water, with every species biting vigorously in the rivers, reefs, and offshore! You can reel in pretty much anything you can think of, from Mangrove Jack to Barramundi, grander Black Marlin to feisty Dogtooth Tuna. It’s a real fishing carnival!

November

Angling action on the reefs is winding down, but deep sea fishing for monster catches is still very much on. Black Marlin are most sought-after this time of year, but you could easily stumble upon Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish and Giant Trevally, to name a few.

December

The holiday season is upon us, and going fishing in Port Douglas sounds like an amazing Christmas present. You can catch anything from Sailfish, Marlin and Giant Trevally to Barramundi. Be sure to get in on the action while the weather is still decent!

What anglers said about fishing in Port Douglas

If you want to catch a lot of fish you need to go to the reef and the weather does not always cooperate especially in the winter. The estuary is an experience all by itself. Be patient and enjoy. Fishing is an experience. The catching of actual fish is just a possible outcome of that experience.

Give it a go even if you don’t catch a fish it’s still worth it. We went thinking we probably wouldn’t which made it such a joy when we caught fish bigger than we expected.

Weather was definately windy and I understand now this was typical for month of July. So if that's not for your party maybe ask when it would be less windy.

Remember to check the season you're in so you know what fish may be biting. Heed the sage advice of the professional fisherman you've engaged for your charter - they really do know what's best! Relax and enjoy the trip!

Worth the drive. Less overfished relative to Carins and shorter boat ride to the fish (this makes it good for kids).
