Fishing in Surfside Beach

Head down to the “Lone Star State” and get ready to experience the five-star fishing in Surfside Beach, TX! With direct access to the Gulf of Mexico’s deep blue waters, “Surfside” is the perfect starting point for anglers looking to travel to the famous canyons that lie further offshore. And that’s not all – if you’re more of an inshore fisherman, you have the famous Galveston Bay complex just a stone’s throw to the east, too. All you need to do is decide where you want to go, and what you want to hook!

Which trip is best for me?

Bay fishing

If you’re drawn in by wild backcountry waters, grassy flats, and seriously tasty species, then make sure you head straight to Galveston Bay. Charters departing from Surfside Beach will usually take you along the West Bay, where you’ll find the much-loved Texan trio of Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder.

These fish make for excellent table fare, are fun to catch, and can be found throughout the bay year round. It’s easy to see why they’re a local favorite. Newbies and families with little ones can opt for a half day trip and fill the boat with some delicious dinner options. More experienced? Spend a full day exploring the entire Galveston Bay complex and test your skills against bull Reds and trophy Trout. You may even encounter a Shark or two!

Gulf fishing

Surfside Beach lies along Texas’s Gulf Coast, so it’s no surprise that one of the main reasons anglers flock to this location is because of its excellent bluewater fishing opportunities. You’ll find plenty of charters ready and waiting to take you out to explore these waters.

If you’re a Red Snapper fanatic, this species can be found around the nearshore wrecks and reefs, along with Mackerel species, Grouper, notorious Shark species, and more. Newer anglers can test out their bottom fishing skills with some hands-on action, whereas hardcore fishermen can hook the trophy Red Snapper of a lifetime. Just check when the open season is!

It would be impossible to talk about Surfside Beach without mentioning the big game fishing that Texas is famous for. Fishermen looking to battle hard-fighting species will find plenty to whet their appetite here. Troll offshore waters for Mahi Mahi, Marlin species, and a variety of Tuna. If you’re looking to earn serious bragging rights, enquire about an overnight trip so you can hit the deep waters of The Canyons, located around 150 miles from shore.

How to prepare

Top-quality charters are the bread and butter of the Texas fishing scene, and captains here know exactly what their guests are looking for when it comes to their trips. You’ll be hooked up with all the fishing gear and local know-how that you need for a productive day.

Bring along a fishing license, as charters throughout the Lone Star State generally won’t cover this for you. You can purchase one beforehand, and it’s a pretty simple process!

Surfside Beach allows you to find out why this part of Texas has remained one of the most popular fishing spots along the Gulf Coast. It may only be a small town, but the angling opportunities on offer are mighty. Come discover them for yourself!

Surfside Beach Fishing Seasons

January
If you’re willing to brave the cold, you can start your year off in the best way, by heading to Surfside Beach for the chance to hook Black Drum and Sheepshead in the bay complex. Huge Redfish are also biting.

February

Stick to the bays and the Gulf’s shoreline waters for the chance to hook Redfish and Sheepshead. Feeling more adventurous? Bull Reds can be hooked by the reefs, as well as Snapper species.

March

Huge Bull Reds are biting within the bays and the Gulf’s inshore waters. If you’re visiting during this time, book in advance – it’s Spring Break, which means charters are in high demand!

April

For many locals, April marks the real start of the fishing season, with Galveston Bay just brimming with Speckled Trout and Redfish. On the Gulf side, Cobia can be found nearshore, as well as Grouper and Snapper.

May

As the weather continues to heat up, so does the angling action. Soak up the sun as you cruise the bay for Bull Redfish, or explore the emerald green waters of the Gulf for Shark species, including Bull and Spinner.

June

Attention, Red Snapper fanatics: This is when the federal season opens, which means anglers traveling on federally-licensed charters can hook and keep the huge variations of this fish found in deeper offshore waters.

July

This is the time to visit if you’re looking to battling some world-famous big game species, with Billfish and huge Tuna lurking offshore. There are plenty of long-range charters waiting to take you to the hotspots!

August

Big game fishing remains hot, making this a great time to head offshore to battle Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna species, and many more. Snapper and Grouper can be hooked around the reefs, and bay fishing is plentiful, too.

September

The temperatures start to drop, but Gulf fishing is still seriously productive. Nearshore, you can target Mackerel and Shark species, as well as Cobia. Bay fishing offers up Speckled Trout and Bull Reds.

October

The inshore waters of the bays and the Gulf are brimming with Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder, with San Luis Pass being a particularly productive spot. Red Snapper continue to lurk around the reefs.

November

The waters may be cooling slightly, but the fishing shows no signs of slowing down, with inshore trips being particularly productive. Flounder, Specks, and Redfish can all be found in the bays.

December

End your year on a high note, and head to Surfside Beach to sample some incredible fishing. Flounder, Speckled Trout, and Redfish are all on offer inshore, and huge Snapper species can be hooked by the reefs.

There was bad weather so we were not able to go out to the Jetties. We ended up fishing in shore. We still caught a good amount of fish. The captain did a very good job. And was very entertaining. I just wish the weather was better but you cannot fault anyone for that. We did catch two tarpon on our trip.

My family had an amazing trip. The guid was knowledgeable and very professional at all times. Not to mention I am a disabled veteran who has issues with my right arm so it is very difficult for me to land big fish. Well not on this trip. I landed the fish of a life time ( for me) lol. I can't thank Josh enough and can't wait to get back out on the surf again. I learned so much and gained experience that you can only learn by doing, and we did.

We had a great time and caught a few fish including a shark. Luckily the weather was nice most of the time we were there but it did rain one day which was okay because we just relaxed in the camper and had some good family time cooking. We'll be booking again in August before the kids go back to school. Thanks for the great experience and professionalism!

Complete newbie and really enjoyed the inshore fishing trip from Freeport down to Brazos River. We caught a variety from red fish and flounder to catfish and blue crab. Captain Lief and Cole were very attentive and helpful guides! I appreciated how they were always fixing up our setup (even after our newbie mistakes) making sure we had working fishing poles with bait on our lines at all times to maximize the time! Highly recommend :)
