What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Herradura, Puntarenas for the first time?

The captain made the trip easy. obviously bring sunscreen and a dry bag for you belongings.

Inshore can be rough- not what a “Gringo” expects…lol but a good time…and beautiful!

Capt. Jorge was very professional and knew exactly where to get fish.I definitely would recommend him if you want a great experience.

Let the crew know what fish you are after. They will take care of the rest. Bring sunscreen and a rain jacket.

Do not hesitate! Just do it! Book Snook, when you arrive find the green shuttle boats to take you out to your vessel!

For some boats, you are required to get on a water taxi and ride out to the actual fishing boat. If there is any chop, this could result in getting hurt. Get a boat located in a marina

When considering my next inshore trip. I think i would try a later trip. We were prepared for the inshore heat and fished hard for results.

Give yourself a long enough charter to maximize your opportunities. Sunscreen and liquids are a must.

Fish nearshore in smaller boats and only use boats 38ft or larger for off shore. January is the best time for the larger fish.

Book fast as it’s busy season, we came planning to book here but the options were limited. But we ended up on the best boat with the best crew! Couldn’t have asked for anything better!

Sunscreen, large billed hat, and a long sleeved sun shirt. These made it a lot more comfortable under the hot sun.

Great fishing location / pods of dolphins; yellow fin tunas jumping/ many sailfish/ some blue mains / lots of mahi mahi

Book close in short trips to catch fish to eat, and book day long trips to go out 20 miles for sailfish.

Not many fish around this December. As the captain said “ you should have been here in November “

Rain jacket helped when we went through some rain. If you get motion sickness easily, bring Dramamine or something along those lines.

Just be prepared to get dirty! You’ll get splashed on by the fish (lightly) and you might get some blood on you.

Definitely bring a rain jacket and expect to have to brace yourself a bit for rough seas. Also, make sure to take some Dramamine.

Yes the captain has great at finding the fish and we had a great time. Herradura was a good port to go out of. Would highly recommend.

Fish Quepos/ Manuel Antonio if possible but if you’re looking for something near Jaco/ Herradura definitely book the Brothers Alex Tour.

Bring a cooler if you plan to take fish home. There is an ice vending machine just outside the launch beach.

Try a half day that is more affordable. If we would have chose a few of the other options and still not catch much, we would have been very disappointed.

Prepare for a long boat ride to get to the tuna this time of year; I thought we'd be much closer to shore. Sporadic action but when it's on...it's on.

I can see kids having trouble reeling in those larger fish. This trip was actually more than I expected, great lunch, beverages, knowledge and overall day. Just fabulous.

Make sure you have a clear plan with your captain, and make sure they understand what you want to catch. Find another spot if you're not catching.

The trip is behind the pelican restaurant next to los suenos. A mistake I made was going to los suenos marina. Then I had to walk 20 min. To the actual spot.

We caught a bad moon cycle and the fishing was a little slow.(some days are like that) however We did catch a really nice trophy size cubera.

Captain said that they caught 13 fish the day before. Hard to believe we did not catch anything except two small fish.

Ask the captains what’s biting and fish for whatever that is. Don’t waste your time chasing a dream fish that’s not in the area at the time you’re there.

Fishing in january in this part of costa rica is one of the best times of the year highly recommended.

Understand if you want to fight or eat or both. Redfish are a great fight and taste great. Roosters are a good fight but are terrible on the table. Understand your bait.
