Fishing in Ontario

Famous for its vast number of lakes, the “Province of Opportunity” holds many angling secrets. For anyone looking to discover a few, Ontario fishing charters offer all kinds of adventures. Whether you’re planning a Great Lakes trip, or fancy heading to some inland waters, you’re in for some of the finest freshwater fishing in North America.

Ontario borders four of the five Great Lakes. Among these, Lake Erie features arguably the best Walleye fishing in the world. The other three – Ontario, Huron, and Superior – are fantastic choices for anyone looking to target Salmon, Steelhead, or Trout. Of course, species such as Perch and Bass are also in the cards.

Other nearby lakes, such as Lake St. Clair, Lake Simcoe, and Lake Nipissing also offer plenty of excitement, especially during winter. When the ice gets thick enough, all three of these make for excellent ice fishing action. North of Lake Superior, you’ll find Lake Nipigon, renowned for its trophy Walleye numbers.

In the western corner of the province, you’ll get the chance to fish Lake of the Woods. Along its waters, you can catch Musky, Northern Pike, as well as Sauger and Walleye. The fishing is good all over Ontario, however, anglers will need to plan a fly-in trip in order to reach the fisheries up north.

You’ll find charter guides scattered along the shores of every Great Lake. On other, more remote lakes, you’ll find fishing lodges, offering trips and accommodation. You can fish Ontario’s waters year-round, but you’ll have to fish on the ice during winter.

Rules & Regulations

In Ontario, anglers between the ages of 18 and 65 will need to buy a fishing license. It’s also a good idea to check the fish regulations before your trip, as they tend to change between seasons.

Ontario Fishing Seasons

January

Lakes throughout Ontario are covered with shanties at this time of year. Dress up warm and try ice fishing for Yellow Perch, Walleye, and a host of other species. It’s a real seasonal specialty here.

February

Ice fishing is still going strong around the province, especially in spots like Lake Simcoe. Don’t like the ice? The Niagara River flows fast enough to avoid freezing and is amazing for Steelhead.

March

Lakes slowly start to thaw in March, and the ice fishing season draws to a close in many places. Some lakes are still safe to fish on, though, so head out there and bag some Perch while you can!

April

April is a real time of change for Ontario fishing. The spring season starts to warm up, with Steelhead, Pike, Perch, and Walleye showing their faces as the ice finally retreats.

May

The fish are getting ready for their spring runs throughout Ontario. Trout and Salmon take to the rivers, and Walleye and Perch start biting hard in the lakes. You can also find some monster Musky.

June

June is a special month in the Heartland Province. The waters are warm enough to make fish active without sending them offshore to deeper waters. In short, it’s the perfect time for lake fishing.

July

You’ll have to head offshore to target Walleye or Perch this time of year. Bass love the warm water, and both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are on fire throughout the summer months.

August

Brown Trout make the Grand River a fly fisher’s dream this time of year, while more adventurous anglers take to the north on fly-in sportfishing adventures seeking Pike and Char.

September

Temperatures start to drop by the middle of September. This brings Walleye and Yellow Perch back to nearshore waters. If you want to load up on tasty lake fish, this is the perfect time!

October

The Great Lakes are still swarming with fish in October. Head to Lake Ontario to take on Chinook, Coho, and Atlantic Salmon, and Walleye. Otherwise, Bass are going crazy in Lake Erie!

November

The Salmon bite tends to drop off as the weather turns cold, but there are still Trout around to make up for it. Bass could also be biting, depending on the temperature.

December

In cold years, Simcoe, Erie, and St. Clair can all be ready for ice fishing in December. Head out with a guide or a local to be sure it's safe, and enjoy productive Perch and Walleye fishing.

Research getting fish home - shipping or carrying yourself. We planned to catch and release but in hindsight it would have been nice to bring some salmon home.

Yes. Small party and the boat got the job done. Dave was great about letting my two sons go to shore because of the rough water, we caught a fish immediately after going back out.

Please listen to your captain and always follow their recommendations. If they tell you a day is not good follow their instructions the captains know the waters they boat and fish in like the back of their hand. Our captain was very knowledgeable. Recommended a different day and it was spot on.
