We stay in the calm waters of the sound or depending on the weather, will head out into the ocean, catching drum, speckled trout, flounder, spanish mackeral and whatever else the ocean might bring us that day. If the weather is cooperating that day, we can mix it up and do both sound an ocean. A full day trip is a great way to catch a variety of fish and allows the Capt. time to try various spots.

Cobia Fishing in North Carolina

If you’re looking for a tough battle that’ll have you filling the boat with delicious fish, North Carolina Cobia fishing is for you. Unlike other states, Cobia come right up to shore in NC, giving you the chance to land a prized catch in state waters. Test your trolling, bottom fishing, and jigging skills all in a morning’s work as you go after these beauties in the Tar Heel State.

What to Expect

Revered all over the country, Cobia are a special fish. Known for their tendency to do anything they can to get off the end of your line, they’ll put up a serious fight to come aboard.et ready for an intense battle to land some meat.

What kind of trip is for me?

With the fish coming so close to shore, you’ll have the added benefit of being able to land a Cobia on a trip as short as just four hours. Beginners and families can take advantage of these trips and get used to the open ocean. You’ll go beyond the barriers in the Atlantic to reel in your first fish.

Experienced anglers can make the most of North Carolina’s Cobia fishing by spending a full day or even longer on the water. Whether looking to stay inshore, or combine your Cobia fishing trip with some big game fishing offshore, there’s a wealth of trips on offer for you in NC.

Where to Go

All of North Carolina’s coast is geared up for fishing. With Cobia inhabiting the waters up to three miles out, you’ll be able to target them anywhere in the state. Take a charter from as far north as Duck, all along the Outer Banks, or down in Morehead City or Wilmington and get your hands on these beasts.

When to Go

North Carolina’s Cobia fishing season usually opens on May 1st, when the peak fishing season is about to take off. Preferring warm waters, Cobia migrate north from Florida along the Gulf Stream, making an appearance in NC around mid-May. They stay in huge numbers for a month or so, before gradually making their way further up the East Coast. But don’t worry – there’ll be plenty of stragglers for you to target throughout the summer!

How to Prepare

Depending on whether your captain goes offshore or not, you could be fishing from a huge offshore sportfishing vessel or a smaller boat like a center console. The former will have all the amenities you’d expect for a long trip to sea, including a toilet, while the latter may be a bit more basic. In any case, you’ll be expected to bring your own drinks and snacks aboard to make the most of your day.

North Carolina Cobia fishing is even easier than you thought, with your fishing license covered by your charter. There’s nothing left to do but get ready for your next fishing adventure!

Dane and Dave spent 4 hours on a private charter with Captain Esben today. They had the absolute best time! They are already talking about booking again with him next year! Esben’s professionalism, patience, and friendly demeanor paved the way for their great experience! Dane caught his first cobia and loved every minute of it! Great way to make long lasting memories here at OBX!

Fantastic day on the water
5/5
JW Charters was great! John and Wes both are locals to the OBX and they know the water! They got us on multiple cobia during the may run. We were out ahead of a lot of the other groups and we did fantastic. We had no problem reaching out limit to take home. Thanks!

Amazing fishing trip!
5/5
We had such an amazing time on this fishing trip. Captain Dev knew all the right spots and took us on a trip of a lifetime. His mate Spencer was great and helped us with everything. We caught over 100 pound of fish and so many different species including black bass, trigger fish, blue fish, shark, cobia, ribbon fish. Everyone in our family had a blast and we can't wait till our next trip. Thank you Captain Dev and Spencer for an unforgettable experience!

Wrightsville Charter with Guion
5/5
Had a great trip with Guion out 8-9 miles for a four-hour trip. Caught several fish, but one 30-pound Cobia that feed my family for 3 meals and enough for Guion's large family for one. Boat is large enough for 3-4 and his experience in the NC Coastal waters is excellent. Great personality and lives for this along with his duck/deer/beer excursions. Would highly recommend.

Top Notch Trip
5/5
We have been coming down for years and have fished with multiple boats/crews and Capt. Nick and First mate Shane gave us an incredible 6 hr. Trip. We caught cobia, red snapper, amberjack, barracuda and lost 2 good sized grouper. Super friendly and we’re super focused on getting some fish on board. Will definitely fish on Fish Witch again next year. Thank you again, The Holmes family
