Cobia Fishing in Outer Banks

Cobia
  • Size 10 to 30lbs
  • Food Value Good
  • Game Qualities Good
  • Habitats Inshore, Nearshore, Offshore, Reef, Wreck

(Rachycentron canadum)

Every year, thousands of Cobia make the long migration from the Gulf of Mexico to the Northeast. The whole of North Carolina goes wild for this exciting, delicious fish when it pops by in summer. Outer Banks Cobia fishing charters will take you to the temperate nearshore waters where monster Cobia prey on smaller fish. Get ready for thrilling action as you battle it out to try and fill the boat!

What to Expect

Almost every saltwater fishing charter in the OBX go after Cobia. The much-loved fish is a prize for anglers all over the world, and North Carolina is no different. Head out of the middle and lower Outer Banks and discover a whole new world of thrilling fishing. As close as 5 miles offshore, you’ll find the fruitful fishing grounds, so you’ll waste no time whatsoever.

Hop aboard in May or June for the best chance of catching a Cobia, and you’ll have the benefit of great weather, too. Along the nearshore reefs and wrecks, you can bottom fish and sight cast as these beasts stay close to the water tops. Follow Sharks, Manta Rays, and other predators that Cobia follow, as they vacuum up any scraps to eat.

A tough-fighting creature, Cobia will make you work hard to land them aboard. Get ready for drag-screaming action after the fish takes your bait, and then be prepared for some heavy lifting, too.

The open waters of the Atlantic are a must for any angler worth their salt. Spend anywhere between four and eight hours on the water, targeting bite after bite to fill the boat. There’s no better taste than that of your own catch, and Cobia is no exception. They’ll give you the chance to enjoy the fruits of your labor after a productive day out on the water.

How to Prepare

With great inshore and excellent deep sea fishing, most captains operate a range of trips. Boats can range from small center consoles to massive offshore sportfishing boats. No matter which vessel you board, you’ll have everything you need for a fruitful day out.

Your captain will provide rods, reels, and bait, so just bring yourself, your friends, or family, and enjoy the ride. Pack some drinks and snacks to make the most of your day, and you’re good to go! Let an Outer Banks Cobia fishing charter take you away to the fishing of your dreams!

Driving from Emerald Isle to Sealevel puts you on fish faster rather than wasting time boating and fishing less time.

Nags Head has always provided great fishing, but donโ€™t expect it to be easy in the middle of summer. The better fishing, in my experience has been in the spring or later in the summer/fall.

This was our first time fishing in Manteo, we caught a quantity of small fish that will be perfect for dinner, which was our goal. We also took and hour to go for another type after we had the quantity that we were looking for. It was a great experience, a little different than we expected, but a good time was had by all. We know it is early in the season so we did anticipate to have less options as far as what was biting.

We were hoping to catch a bit more fish, but the weather was maybe a bit too perfect with no current whatsoever. Still able to bring in speckled trout, gray trout, flounder, red drum and had a couple of blues get away.

Big game fish are 40 miles out so plan an all day charter. Inshore fishing is fast and furious and fish are smaller. Fun nonetheless!
