Blue Marlin Fishing in Mexico

Marlin fishing in Mexico is so good it can sometimes look like trophy fish just jump into the local fishing boats. As any angler knows, though, it only looks like that after you’ve gone through a challenging fight, which can take on epic proportions. Marlin fishing charters in Mexico will provide you with the gear and knowledge you need to take this fight to the next level and catch a Marlin to call your own.

When the Aztecs used to go fishing for Marlin, they’d ask for help from Opochtli, the god of hunting and fishing. Now, you can get expert support from one of the many local deep sea fishing guides. With their renowned skills in introducing clients to these most prestigious of Billfish, it’s no surprise that more than 30,000 sportfishing enthusiasts join them in Mexico every year to try their luck and test their skills against this fish.

Where to catch Marlin

You can find Marlin species in all coastal regions of Mexico. To the east, the country looks out onto the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, while the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California (formerly known as the Sea of Cortez) meet the western shores. But where are you most likely to catch a fish to write home about?

Yucatan Peninsula

The famous tourist resorts of the Yucatan Peninsula look out onto miles of Caribbean Sea shorelines. But people don’t just come to the Riviera Maya for sandy beaches and shoreline entertainment. International sportfishers come here every year for one thing – Marlin.

Charter boats operate all the way along the coastline from Cancun to Tulum, with local guides waiting to show you the best places to hunt. One of the best places to start is Playa del Carmen, where the island of Cozumel creates a natural funnel, causing Marlin and other Billfish to swim just a couple of miles from the shoreline.

Baja California

On the other side of the country, Baja California separates the Gulf of California from the Pacific Ocean. Right at the meeting point of these two waterways lies Los Cabos, the southernmost tip of the peninsula. Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are the main port cities in this area, and are among the top places in the world for Marlin fishing. In fact, the sheer number of Marlins that get caught here have given the area the name of “the Marlin capital of the world.”

It’s no wonder then that the most prestigious event on the saltwater sportfishing calendar takes place in these very waters! Don’t miss Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament in the fall for non-stop Billfish action.

What to expect

The go-to technique for Marlin fishing is trolling. Your captain will load the boat with heavy tackle fishing gear, and you can expect most big game fishing boats to also be equipped with a fighting chair to support you against the jumps and leaps of this enormous animal. Your hook will be baited with either live or artificial bait, depending on the season and the captain’s preference.

These trips usually take place with at least one additional crew member alongside the captain, so you will have all the help and instruction you need as you reel your monster in. Catch and release is usually practiced when catching Billfish, but it’s always best to check with your crew.

When to go

The best time to catch Marlin in Mexico is from April to late summer. Blue Marlin season starts first, at the beginning of spring. They peak in May, when you can expect to catch a whole range of other big game fish as well!

Few countries in the world match Mexico when it comes to the sheer quantity of Marlin hook ups. Come and experience how much these waters have to offer for yourself. We bet that once you’ve tried it once, you’re going to want to come back!
