Fishing in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, or simply “Cabo” to most visitors, is well-known across the continent. It’s a hub for spring break and summer vacations, but it’s also home to some of the best angling action in the Americas. Cabo San Lucas’ fishing charters are legendary, allowing the town to brand itself as the unofficial “Marlin Capital of the World.”

At the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, Cabo attracts an array of prized fish. Year-round, you can find Marlin biting at the end of your line with Striped Marlin appearing in winter and Blue and Black varieties available in the warmer months.

However, it rarely gets cold here, so there’s never a bad time to visit. The Sea of Cortez attracts Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna just a few miles from shore, along with dazzling, exotic Roosterfish and exciting Yellowtails. Head further offshore, and the Billfish bite is sensational, with Sailfish and Swordfish joining Marlin for the chance to complete a “Grand Slam.”

One of the perks of casting from a Cabo San Lucas fishing charter is that you can land a monster fish on a trip as short as a few hours. The productive waters nearshore are ripe for fishing, and 4–6 hours can be enough to land dinner. However, the real prizes come offshore, where a full day or extended full day trip will take you 15–50 miles out to the banks.

Rules & Regulations

Every angler fishing in Mexico needs a license, however, most captains in Cabo will arrange yours for you. Get in touch with your charter operator before you go to confirm, or pick yours up by the dock. You should also beware that you can’t cook your catch on board, so if you want a fishy dinner, you’d better bring your own snacks.

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Seasons

January

Visit Cabo in January, and you'll enjoy some of the best weather of the year. This is usually a dry month, so you can head out and search for Striped Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna offshore, along with Roosterfish inshore.

February

The conditions are generally good but spring storms are a possibility. Watch out for colder currents potentially hampering the conditions. But inshore fishing is very good and the bottom bite heats up offshore, too.

March

Spring Break sees great conditions in Cabo. The Marlin bite can slow down at the start of the month, but it may come back at the end, while Yellowtails and Spanish Mackerel show up inshore for a real fishing frenzy.

April

With temperatures in the mid 80s and humidity generally lower than usual, April has great conditions with virtually no rain. You'll find Striped Marlin and Dorado biting offshore, with Yellowtail and Roosterfish inshore.

May

It weather really begins to heat up come May. Offshore, you can find a good Striped Marlin bite, with exciting Dorado action too. Closer to shore, the Roosterfish season begins to kick off for real, so get your fill!

June

With water temperatures averaging 94 degrees, this is a month for those who like it hot. Fish offshore for Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Wahoo, and big Tuna. Inshore, Roosterfish is on fire, and Snappers and Groupers are biting.

July

July is the warmest month in Cabo and the fishing is hot, too. This is a month for Billfish fans, with Striped Marlin, Sailfish, and Blue Marlin all in the cards. Don't forget about inshore, where monster Roosterfish await.

August

You guessed it – it's hot. August is the wettest month of the year, but don't let that put you off. This is the month for big game anglers, with Black and Blue Marlin on the list Inshore, Wahoo and Dorado join Roosterfish.

September

Tropical storms may threaten but, when the weather allows, this is one of the best months for fishing. You'll find big Yellowfin Tuna, Blue and Black Marlin, and Sailfish to name a few offshore, with Roosterfish in the bay.

October

The world famous Bisbees Black and Blue Tournament is the talk of the town – this is something no sportfishing fan will want to miss. With cooler weather and big fish, this is the best fishing month in Cabo San Lucas.

November

The humidity and temperature drop, so you'll want to make the most of it. Don't miss the WON Tuna Jackpot at the beginning of the month, not the chance to land Striped Marlin, Dorado, and Wahoo, among more.

December

If you want to land a lot of different species in one day, December is the month for you. The main target is Striped Marlin, with Wahoo, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna offering a prized supporting cast offshore, along with more inshore.

What anglers said about fishing in Cabo San Lucas

Hard to say with one afternoon of fishing but if I had to choose Florida (fished numerous times) All my charters now would be in Cabo. More variety in the same area-you don’t spend 2 hrs of you trip getting to the good spot. I’m curious to give it a few more tries and see what it offers!

Be prepared for not ideal conditions and possibly not hooking up to a fish the first few hours, but stay committed to the process and talk with your fishing guides to see if you should potentially change spots or fishing tactics.
