Fishing in Lakeside Marblehead

Even though it doesn’t take up a lot of space on a map, the fishing Lakeside Marblehead has to offer is top-notch. This quaint village has excellent access to Lake Erie and its wealth of marine life. It’s no surprise then that many locals consider fishing to be their calling, which is good news for you. There’s plenty of seasoned pros to help you find the bite.

From here, you have direct access to the Western Basin, one of the most productive fishing grounds on Lake Erie. The prey of choice is feisty Walleye, which grow big in these waters and are fun to target. During the warmest months of the year, anglers flock to Lakeside Marblehead in search of their new personal record.

Yellow Perch is another favorite catch, especially if you’re looking to make a feast out of the fruits of your hard work. Jumbo Perch are always a welcome sight, because they’re both abundant and delicious, and Smallmouth Bass follow closely behind. You can also find Rainbow Trout, Channel Catfish, and other Bass species on your line, if the conditions align.

Because there are so many charter guides in Lakeside Marblehead, there’s a great variety of trips for you to choose from. Half day excursions will keep you closer to shore. They’re perfect for family outings and filling your cooler with good-eating fish. Full day and various combo trips are well-suited for more experienced anglers looking for their next trophy catch.

If you’re looking for charter departure spots, North Shore Boulevard, Saylor Street, and East Harbor Road are all great places to start.

Rules & Regulations

Everyone on the boat who’s 16 and older needs to have a valid Ohio fishing license. Your charter captain will provide everything else you need. It's up to you to show up with a license and get fishing.

Lakeside Marblehead Fishing Seasons

January

Fishing significantly slows down in January, and most boats are out of the water and under maintenance, preparing for the arrival of the new high season. Depending on the weather, you can do some ice fishing, as long as the ice is strong enough.

February

Charters will slowly start heading out onto the lake, but only if the ice has cleared. Walleye hang around the Western Basin year-round, so if you’re willing to endure the low temperatures, you might be rewarded with this Lake Erie staple.

March

This is when Walleye start making their presence known, and all other fish become more active as well. March is usually the start of the season for Lakeside Marblehead fishing charters, and the bite will only get better from now on.

April

This is the perfect time to hook trophy-sized Walleye! Most charters will take you out to the early-season hotspots around Kelleys Island, Put-In-Bay Island, and the Bass Islands. In more good news, Rainbow Trout are also out there in good numbers.

May

The Western Basin is all about Walleye in May. This is also a good time to combine fishing action with a stop-off at one of the Western Basin’s islands to soak up the sun. There’s more and more Perch swimming around for your pleasure.

June

June is one of Lakeside Marblehead’s most productive months, and for good reason – the trophy-size Walleye are just about everywhere, and Smallmouth Bass is common, too. Don’t forget about slews of tasty Perch waiting to gulp down your bait.

July

The lake’s inhabitants are most active during the hottest days of the year, so make the most of this opportunity! Trophy Walleye, top-notch Smallies, and solid Perch and Trout fishing will keep you busy at all times of the day. Whether you want one or all species, it’s up to you.

August

It’s all about a Yellow Perch extravaganza in August! These scrumptious fish are everywhere. Meanwhile, Walleye fishing remains hot. Weather conditions will dictate whether you fish the shallows or around the reefs and islands.

September

Both Yellow Perch and Smallmouth Bass fishing is excellent, and lunker Walleye will be waiting for you in the deeper waters around the Western Basin’s islands. The weather is getting trickier to predict, so have your rain gear at hand.

October

It’s getting colder on the water in the fall, but Yellow Perch fishing only gets hotter. The Walleye bite is still going strong as well. Once you’ve had your fill of action, head to land to enjoy the annual Lighthouse Festival.

November

Walleye and Yellow Perch fishing is excellent at the beginning of the month but tends to slow down as the waters gradually begin to cool. This is also the end of the charter season on Lake Erie, and by mid-November, most boats are out of the water.

December

As the season comes to an end, Walleye can still be found in the shallows of the Western Basin – if you’re willing to battle the winter winds, that is. If the lake freezes towards the end of the month, you can enjoy some ice fishing.

Just remember that even though it.is good fishing for Walleye the second to third week in June it's also Mayfly season. This means the Walleye have a lot to eat, so the captain can do his best but can't always control how well the Walleye are biting. Overall though it is a wonderful experience and I can't recommend it enough. It's beautiful out on the lake, the fishing is fun and a real learning experience for kids, and the best part is Walleye are good eatin'.

A lot of mayflies, but I guess that’s not out of the norm for this time of year, other than that, and me finding out my motion sickness is worse than any of us imagined, it was a great trip!!! Tim and the boys caught 14 walleye in a little over an hour, they definitely would have caught their limit, had I not been so sick. I will stay land side next trip ?

Weather and wind will disperse fish and make them more difficult to catch. If a client can wait 2-3 days of nice weather after a heavy wind and/or storm, the fishing will likely be better.
