Fishing in Virginia

From remote Trout streams to the mighty Chesapeake Bay, and out to the Atlantic, Virginia’s wealth of angling options is something special. Of course, the best way to discover it all is with an experienced guide aboard a Virginia fishing charter. And, thankfully, there are plenty of them.

When it comes to the fish you’ll be targeting, it all depends on where you head. In the rivers and creeks, Trout is the name of the game. Brook, Rainbow, and Brown Trout reign supreme here, with Catfish showing up in deeper spots. Walleye, Panfish, and Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Striped Bass are available in the lakes, so get ready for a fishing frenzy.

Things get even better in saltwater. The Chesapeake Bay is one of the country’s best fisheries, and Striped Bass – or Rockfish, as they’re named here – are always available. Cobia is another prized species, but you could also get your hands on anything from Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, and Flounder to Tautog, Black Seabass, and Triggerfish. And if you head offshore, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and Billfish are in abundance.

With such a range of fishing on offer, there are plenty of trips to choose from. Beginners and families can get to learn the ropes on trips as short as a couple of hours. But if you want to get the most out of the deep waters, you’ll want at least a full day. You’ll find Virginia fishing charters all around the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast, with freshwater guides a little harder to come by in the remote wilderness.

Rules & Regulations

Freshwater anglers will need to get a VA fishing license regardless of whether they’re going out with a guide or on their own. However, if you’re on a saltwater fishing charter, your license will be covered. Your professional captain will also keep you up to date on all the latest bag and size limits.

Virginia Fishing Seasons

January

Early in the year, some of the best fishing available is in Virginia’s lakes and rivers. Try your luck coaxing the bite from a variety of Trout, Bass, and more in the wild.

February

February can be a good time to experience local Trout fishing, or try your luck with Yellow Perch swimming in the Northwest River. The shallow water bordering Chesapeake Bay holds Black Drum and more.

March

Bass fishing picks up momentum in March, with Largemouths taking spoons, jigs, and other lures tossed their way. For the best results, fish local lakes when the water is at its highest.

April

Come spring, anglers on the Chesapeake Bay are trolling for Rockfish and Bluefish. Fishing on the eastern shore is just starting to heat up, with early Flounder appearing in the shallows.

May

The Flounder run has begun, ringing in the season for bottom fishing. If you’re looking for some hard-fighting action, be sure to get in on the inshore Shark fishing that kicks off this month.

June

June is a great time to fish the offshore wrecks and reefs for Flounder, Tautog, and Croaker. Shark fishing continues to please adrenaline junkies, who have their pick of inshore and offshore fishing grounds.

July

Bottom fishing continues to be the main attraction in Chesapeake Bay, while anglers on the eastern shore have their pick of Tarpon in the channels, a variety of fish on the wrecks, and big game prizes offshore.

August

Summer is the season for deep sea delights like Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and monster Sharks. The offshore wrecks are abundant with Black Seabass, Spadefish, Triggerfish, Tautog, and more, too.

September

Croaker start leaving in September, just in time for more Flounder to take over. Striped Bass and Bluefish are reappearing, and anglers on the Chesapeake Bay will soon start trolling again.

October

Yellowfin Tuna are swimming farther out, but you can still catch some if you’re up for a trip to the offshore fishing grounds. Meanwhile, anglers inshore are making the most of Striper season.

November

Fishing close to shore is excellent at this time of year, with Rockfish, Speckled Trout, large Black Drum, and much more to be had. Freshwater anglers can enjoy fishing for Trout and Bass, too.

December

Many charter boats are closed for the season, but you can still have great success fishing from shore or casting your line in one of VA’s many lakes, streams, and ponds. Head to the Potomac River for giant Blue Catfish.

Sometimes catching the big ones is a lot of luck to be in the right spot. Remember it is a big ocean. The fishing boat captains talk to each other when they spot a school of big fish.

Listen to your Captain and crew always. You may know what you are doing but they know the water. Remember the more heads involved in a hunt the better the outcome, especially when you allow combined experience to work.

Try to be specific about the type(s) of fish you hope to catch. That will be helpful for the Captain to know.

Bring a jacket and be flexible with weather. The captain will do his best to help maximize the catch but it really all depends on the current. We caught a croaker and 5 round heads. We saw dolphin and sting rays as well!
