Fishing in South Carolina

Home to some of the finest and most varied fishing on the East Coast, the Palmetto State’s waters are an angler's dream. From marshes and backwaters teeming with Redfish to the deep blue seas where big game fish roam, you'll find them all out here. All you need to do is hop on one of the many South Carolina fishing charters, and you'll be ready to start the adventure of a lifetime.

Besides year-round populations of Redfish, South Carolina's inshore waters house a range of other species. These include Speckled Trout, Black Drum, Flounder, Sheepshead, and even Tarpon in the lowcountry.

If you head a little into the ocean, you'll start seeing Spanish and King Mackerel, as well as Cobia. Along the reefs, there are also Grouper, Snapper, Spadefish, and tasty Triggerfish for you to reel in. Of course, the deeper you go, the bigger the fish. About 50 miles offshore, in the Gulf Stream, you can catch Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and big bottom dwellers.

Naturally, there are also plenty of freshwater fishing opportunities, too. Lakes such as Santee Cooper, Murray, and Hartwell offer epic Bass, Crappie, and Catfish angling. Lake Jocassee, on the other hand, has Brown and Rainbow Trout swimming in it. Another solid choice if you want to catch Gar, Bowfish, Bass, or Catfish is the Waccamaw River.

Some charter fishing hubs include Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Hilton Head Island. Half day outings will give you enough time to explore the inshore waters or lakes. For offshore fishing, you'll need 8 or more hours on the water.

Rules & Regulations

Anglers aged 16 and older need to have South Carolina fishing licenses to fish legally. There are separate freshwater and saltwater permits, so make sure to get the correct one. However, you won't need a license when fishing aboard saltwater charter boats.

South Carolina Fishing Seasons

January

For Striped Bass fans, Lake Hartwell is a productive spot to go to in January. Striped Bass. Tidal Redfish are excellent targets inshore, while big Bluefins can be caught in the Gulf Stream.

February

It's still Bluefin season offshore! Along the coast, the waters should be clear, meaning sight fishing is an excellent option. If you’re a Catfish fan, you’ll want to target giant Blue Catfish that love this weather.

March

This is the month Crappie anglers have been waiting for in South Carolina. The water is still clear in the shallows so sneaking up on large schools of Redfish is very productive. Try poling for extra stealth!

April

Spanish Mackerel and Cobia start moving into the waters of South Carolina in force during April. For freshwater fishermen, Largemouth Bass action is all the rage during April.

May

Cobia action gets serious during May, especially in the area around Beaufort. They like structures, so keep an eye on things like bridge supports, buoys, or clusters of seaweed.

June

Redfish extravaganza! As the waters warm up, Redfish start hunting in earnest, so this is the perfect time to go after some Bulls in the lowcountry. Mahi Mahi start moving offshore, too, making for interesting targets.

July

The Silver Kings take court in July, especially in the lowcountry waters. Offshore, you'll get to chase after Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, and Mahi, while bottom fishing is also as productive as always.

August

Offshore anglers can have a ton of fun going after Spanish and King Mackerel. They’ll be moving in schools, so if you’ve found one, you’ve found many. You can find them just a few miles off the coast.

September

On the mainland, freshwater anglers can look forward to some refreshing Redeye Bass action on the Chattooga River. In the Gulf Stream, you can expect the Yellowfin Tuna bite to start picking up.

October

The colder weather allows for inshore and backwater fishing to get intense during October. Redfish, Flounder, and Spotted Seatrout are all great targets for sight fishing, as the waters are much clearer than in warmer months.

November

Redfish are still champions of the catch list during this month. The marshes and tidal creeks make for good fishing grounds. Freshwater is all about schools of Striped Bass at Lake Moultrie, creating major excitement.

December

Inshore, Spotted Seatrout fishing turns from the fall feeding frenzy into a precision procedure – the right choice of bait and presentation makes or breaks the attempt. Offshore, the Bluefin Tuna season kicks off.
